Here are the reasons for me having obsessions:

1. I'm bored with life; it's too easy and understimulating for me, so I need a challenge, a passion. That's why whatever I got into, was a great chance for me to prove myself, prove that I'm better than the normal speed, prove that it's too slow and quiet and small and small-scale for me and I need something better. :D So I turn the small thing into a big obsession, trying to raise it to my standards. :D

2. People won't pick on me for being stupid if I know a lot about something valuable. They'll be the stupid ones... slow and satisfied with little. :)

Now why your obsessions?

My most long lasting obsession is searching for answers. Why I do some things and especially why other people do some things, especially since people do the weirdest things. Sometimes I find them, sometimes I don't. It's not even about the facts, but understanding.

This is not just an Aspie thing....

Although,I don't consider myself bored with life,on contrary.
I'm bored with society in general.

Actually, this seems to be quite common among modern humanity.

I believe that has something to do with Asperger's syndrome.

My obsessions develop when I read or hear about something that sounds interesting and I just end up wanting to know more and more about the topic. For example, I got interested into Neuroscience, my most recent obsession, a few months ago after reading about the connection between Autism and mirror neurons in a science magazine (Scientific American IIRC), and now have been devouring books on Neuroscience ever since.

Obsessions come and go, but the two that have stuck with me are music and people watching.

People watching is easy. Because even as a child I recognized that I was different, I watched the interactions of NT's around me and studied them, trying to discover what it was that made me different, what it was that I didn't get. The answer, of course, is that I'm not an NT, but along the way it has made for some very interesting occurences, and I have learned to parrot certain NT behaviors, which is very helpful in the workplace.

Music...I love sound. I love music. I love picking up an instrument, especially one I have no experience with, and seeing what I can do. I love combining sounds to get different effects. I love the structure of music, and the linguistic applications of using tone and pitch to create feeling in the listener.

I have my obsessions to give my life meaning and keep me sane. Current ones are cars, photography, sex, and beer brewing.

My current obsessions I've had for quite a while now, going on about 2 years:

- Gaming: PC, Xbox, DS... I can game pretty much from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep at night
- Web Design: I'm kinda hooked on making my site better. I even noticed when one of the buttons I made for the home page was 1 pixel taller than the others...

Because I feel incomplete without one.

I don't have any reason for my obsessions... they're as much a part of me as is, say, my sense of humour or my blue eyes or whatever else. They just...happen. I feel compelled towards them and can't stop. I can't really explain a 'why'; it's more just an 'is'.

That and that I don't like flitting around. I'd rather be authoritative on a few subjects than vaguely knowledgable in all.

They just happen for me. Without them, I'd be bored all the time and have little to look forward to, as sad as that sounds.

I like to accumulate knowledge and read about a variety of things.

I love cats because they are a comfort to me.
