I've seen a few topics in the forum about the 'weird' or different sense of humour a lot of people here have compared with NTs, but I was wondering if anyone is actually lacking a sense of humour?

I often find humour confusing or even illogical at times. It's rarely on my mind to be humerous when talking with people.

In my experiences in the workplace, there is a lot of witty chat, and joking going on. If I was able to do this too, I know I could fit in a lot easier, but I find it very difficult to do. Witty retorts and remarks don't come to me in an instant - if at all. If I try to be funny it sounds forced, comes out wrong, and/or isn't very funny anyway, so I rarely try :?

Can anyone relate, or have any advice on developing a sense of humour?

I don't think it's humor that makes one with AS fit in; it's just one piece of social interaction, and since we're kinda impaired in the whole gamut of said social interaction..., you can see how that goes.

Sarcasm and irony are easy to learn I've found; irony is just pointing out connections to things, i.e., I'm utterly ret*d in social interaction but here I am chatting away?

Irony has logic that one can see in its illogical paradigms.

Sarcasm and sardonicism are easy to utilize too, but it can offend people; if you direct it at yourself and it makes people laugh, I guess you've scored social points there.

No, it is everybody else who lacks a sense of humor  nah, I have been argued to be fairly funny by NT standard.

It helps to have a sense of humor to get through life...without it, life will be miserable.

But, not everyone can be a Jerry Seinfeld...just be yourself.

Funnybone broken? topic

This can develop with age. I was very serious until my late twenties, then I learned literary irony (not sarcasm--I do not get most of it) that is visually based. My topic titles I literally lift from stored/experienced visuals.

If it is fixed, do not break it becomes:
If it is broken, do not fix it. He, He. Oh, well, this becomes:
If you break your funnybone, it may take a long time to heal, or
If you break your funnybone, try to fix/ge it fixed it, or
If you break your funnybone, it will heal quickly on its own, or
If your funnybone is amputated, get a prosthesis.

An on, and on, ad nauseum. :eew: 8O :D

While I do have a sense of humor, there is often a delay between someone telling me a joke or giving a compliment and me recognizing it as such. Sometimes I can figure it out in time, most of the time I can't.

Lack of humor?? NOPE.

I try to tell a joke but taken seriously because I keep a straight face. Just because someone else doesn't get it doesn't mean I don't have a sense of humor.

I have a weird sense of humor. Like, I thought "No Country For Old Men" was hilarious, but I seemed to be the only person in the whole theater who was laughing. It was kinda awkward . As far as quick, witty banter is concerned, I am terrible. I just don't even try anymore. I make people laugh with my goofy awkwardness and random jokes. It's not particularly sexy but people seem to like having me around. I'm especially fun when I'm all strung out on caffeine . Also when I'm drunk. But not when I just had 7 cups of coffee and am drunk, because that just spells lots of vomiting .

I feel that I have a sense of humor, but often my jokes are too smart for my classmates, and they think I am just being stupid.

My sense of humour isn't for everybody. ;)

I take things quite so literal. It's hard for me to understand humor and jokes. But I do have my own sense of humor however.

I don't know whether I have a normal sense of humor. I do enjoy comedy on television or on the internet. Casual humor I have problems with.

It's just that most the stuff NTs come up with in causal conversation isn't very funny to me. I often do get the jokes, but usually they just aren't funny to me. Are NTs able to fake laughter in a social setting in order to fit in? Or are they are programmed to find things funny just because the rest of the group is laughing? Is laughter contagious with NT's? Has anyone figured this out?

Welcome 7of9,

I don't think aspies lack a sense of humor but we do have two very obvious issues;

1. It sometimes takes us longer to get a joke - because we process information quite differently. Sometimes our perspective means that we don't get a joke at all.

2. We laugh at funny things - regardless of whether they're politically correct or not.

Are you sure you don't have a sense of humor?

Sounds like me, exactly. I'm slow to get things, especially compliments.
