What is the 'Outbox' for?

I just got a message from a member, wrote a reply, and when I checked to make sure it was sent I didn't see it in the sent box but it was in the out box. I guess I'm a little thrown, what's the difference between the two?

Sentbox = Actually sent
Outbox = Waiting to be sent.

Think like an email client.

Inbox is for messages coming in.

Outbox is for messages going out.

A sentbox means the person that you sent the pm to has yet to see it. The outbox means he/she has seen it.

And by waiting to be sent, you mean the recipient hasn't checked his or her private messages yet. If it's not in the outbox but instead is in the sentbox, you know that at least he or she glanced at your message.
