I was walking home from the Video Store, today. I cut through the park and I could hear someone mumbling behind me. There was an Autistic young man and his mother behind me. The young man asked himself over and over, "Why do people have to call me a Re--rd?" My heart went out to him and I could see the sadness in his eyes. I would like today's Grade School Students recieve Sensitivity Training so this nonsence can become a thing of the past.

Clearly kids can act like that sometimes. I would call that behavior "ret*d" if I was, which I am not!

One word-- ignorance. The "people" are clearly ignorant.

My second grade class had sensitivity training on issues like this back in October 1987. It was my first exposure to the word "ret*d". We were told that these people were not like the rest of us through no fault of their own, and that we should smile at them and not call them "ret*d".

Fifteen minutes after the session was over, I was called a ret*d for the first time.

It is ironic, isn't it, when you consider that we are the ones who supposedly lack empathy? I may not be tuned in to the way others feel most of teh time, but I would never call soemone a ret*d (well, except for soemthign anonymous, such as "some ret*d cut all the pictures out of this library book!"). Were I to actually meet the person, I wouldn't call them a ret*d.

Up to a point I agree, but sometimes I'm inclined to think that those who will not use their intelligence are truely ret*d!

I feel ret*d. Even my parents call me ret*d.

So someone that did something really stupid and developed brain damage to the point of being mentally ret*d, it wasn't their fault? That is silly.

I call myself ret*d all the time. Does not matter.

It's painful to see and hear people being hurt in that way, especially little kids. God, it makes me so sad. How do you explain such cruelty to little children and how can you protect them from it? I don't know the answer to that question.

Because we look and behave "ret*d" to people (the common definition); you'll see me walking around with my mother flapping my fingers near my face and curling my hands up, and when I speak, it'll be very slow. I'm 28.

It's just how it goes (people like making fun of others for their own gain).

It's a common reaction for children, to use a word they only partly understand to insult others. I don't pass judgement on those children, they can't help doing it any more than we can help being blunt (ie: not impossible, but against our nature).
