Greetings all.

I am starting this one for any of you who have seen a movie (or movies) that strike a chord with you or ring your memory bell. That is when an actor playing in the film does someting that echoes something you experienced.

For starters, I see the title Rainman in quite a few places here. Dustin Hoffman plays the autistic part very well although I found him to present himself more like a chronically overloaded / overstimulated Aspie with the type of meltdowns a kindergarten-aged Aspie would have.

For me, the school scenes at the beginning of Forrest Gump were like looking through a window into my own past. I was just like that boy (and met the same kinds of hostilities) minus the leg braces.

Drew Barrymore's Never Been Kissed is a far-fetched romantic comedy that had her play as a clueless nerd in high school. Watching it was like having the actress herself come and hold a mirror to my high school picture during those high school hallway scenes. I posted my 411 about NBK here: http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... 093#113093

I'm just curious to know if any of you have had such experiences while watching a flick. Thank-you for any response you might add here.

Taxi Driver is all about social alienation. The protagonist may have AS, or he may be psychotic, but either way we're never exactly sure of what his condition is. It's a very powerful movie. I watched it once, and it stayed in my mind for years. I could hardly bear to watch it a second time until a few years later. I saw too much of myself in the main character.

I saw myself in NBK as well. Completely. Loathe am I to admit it.

I also saw myself in Prozac Nation and Girl Interrupted (the latter to a lesser extent, the former more in the book than the movie- my god, who would have thought someone else would have actualled ODes on antihistamines and written about it). However that's not for Aspie reasons. I was in residential when I watched Girl Interrupted (in the same area as the place Susannah Kaysen actually went, and I was considered to go to the actual place she went and knew people who had gone there), and my mother and I were the only ones in the audience laughing. Everyone else was appalled. We recognized a lot of it.

Max Cohen from Pi always seems to remind me of myself.

You know, for a second there I forgot which movie NBK referred to and assumed you meant Natural Born Killers.

i am sam...he doesn't have Autism, but I can relate to a few things in it. Maybe I just say that because any movie that focuses on someone reterted saddens me. The Phantom of the Opera struck a chord with me, I sided with the phantom the entire movie because I understood most of his actions.

I Can't remeber alot...but, My Girl, and The Other Sister. The Other sister is so inspiring. I believe the girl is Autistic, but I'm not quite sure. anyway it's about a woman with a mental-disability learning to cope in the real world, finding love and more.

Protagonist from the 40 Year-Old Virgin. The specific ways in which he acts socially awkward during the first half of the movie really reminded me of AS.

I started a thread about this last year, but it has drifted into obscurity.
I just thought I would put a link in case anyone wanted to see some more thoughts on the topic.

Papillon, surely you mentioned Dustin Hoffman in Rainman, what about his role as Dega in Papillon itself with Steve McQueen??

Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind"
and
Leonardo DiCaprio (even Tom Hank's character) in "Catch Me if You Can"
and of course
DiCaprio in "The Aviator"

Their obsessive autistic-like focus and persistance towards things reminded me (sometimes) of how I can be, if something interests me.

Anyone ever seen "Buffalo 66?"

Quote:
Billy Brown is at the bottom of the human totem pole. He's violent, boorish, obsessive, angry, self- deluded, and unable to deal with intimacy. He has what are euphemistically called "issues," and, unlike many similar characters, he's not the least bit endearing. Gallo, who, in addition to starring in the movie, wrote it, directed it, and composed the music for it, has hinted that certain aspects of Buffalo '66 are autobiographical (particularly the dinner table interaction between Billy and his parents). If there's even a tenth of Billy in Gallo, "intense" would be an understatement in describing the man.

Interesting movie. This guy kidnaps a girl (Christina Ricci) to pose as his wife when he visits his parents.

Quote:
Billy explains that, although they're playing a couple whose affection "spans time," she's not to touch him.

"The Ice Storm" is another one, also featuring Ricci.
Elijah Wood's character is very aspie.
