i didn't learn to drive until i was 26. no particular reason - i just didn't. and my mother was in her 50s.

(and would you mind changing the "R" word to something else, elk, as many people here get called it as an insult, and it's offensive to them. :( thanks).

I started driving at an average age. I was apprehensive about it, and my leg would fall asleep because I got so tense. This made for some scary experiences early on. But once I learned how, I relaxed. I enjoy driving now, and I just got my Class A license to drive tractor trailers for a living.

How about adding a poll to this topic?
It would be interesting to see the results I think.

I think delays in learning to drive are VERY common.

Elk,
You can change this into a poll by editing it.

After you click on edit, scroll down to the bottom. there is a place for the poll question like, how old were you when you learned to drive. The next space says poll option. Put your first option in, like, 16 to 18 years old. I think you hit enter and another poll option space apprears. Enter whatever you want, maybe, 19 to 25, you can keep add int poll options until the space appears but you have run out of things you want to add. Then submit.

I am an extremely reluctant driver for all the reasons you list (whether my perception of myself is accurate or not, I don't know). The state where I grew up, the legal age to drive was 16, but I didn't get my license till I was 21. Even now I drive as little as possible & hate highway driving as it seems I'm vulnerable to highway hypnosis.

Same here. I was only one of maybe 2 or 3 guys who still road the big yellow limosine to school senior year - the other guys were friends at a vocational school. As for how all that went, yeah it may not have been real cool but I did have the money to buy myself a Roland MC-505 Groovebox as a graduation gift (this is back in 1998 when those were brand new) and my other friend got himself a pair of Technics SL-1200 MKIII's, a Gemini mixer, and a whole record crate of Aphrodite, Ed Rush & Optical, Ram Trilogy, Dillinja, Pish Posh, Zinc, John B, Roni Size, Ray Keith, you get the idea - it paid off quite nicely in the end.

I had no delay with getting my permit... but my license... yeah there was a delay.

I got my permit a week after my birthday... I had finals the day of my birthday, so I decided to wait.

I learned in my dad's stick shift (at the time), and I was not allowed to drive my mom's brand new SUV which is an automatic, but eventually he relented, so I drove my mom's SUV for a week or so, started drivers ed, took that, passed. My dad got a different car that was an automatic, because I sucked at driving stick and he was getting sick of driving at it an old age. So I practiced for a bit, then stopped, then in the spring I drove non-stop, failed my first road test because I was nervous, and aced the second one.

During the winter after I got my permit, a family friend was moving and I got his 1996 Taurus for a bargin... A car with 48,936 miles at the for two grand. At times I've wanted to sell it, and came close, but not ready to for a few more years. So in the summer when I got my license I got it on the road the next day. Yay me.

wow - I had just posted a question about driving on the Teen Forum. My son got his permit easily - aced the test. But after taking road lessons, is nowhere near being able to drive. He's 18. He's very anxious about the whole thing and isn't really sure if he will ever get his license. He didn't like the lessons because he felt like he was being criticized every time he made a mistake. He feels that he isn't aware enough on what's going on all around him. He still wants me to take him out to practice, but only when everything is just right (when he's not tired, or has something else that he wants to do, or not too early, or not too late, or when the stars line up, etc...)

I started driving a tractor (I'm a farmers son) when I was 13, but just on the farm not on roads and stuff. And then on roads when I was 16, started driving a car when I was 17, applied for my licence when I was 18 failed it once when I was 19 and finally passed it when I was 20. I wouldn't consider myself a great driver tho, I tend to zone out and have a lot of bad habits... Still tho driving is alot of fun and it gives you alot of freedom, definetly worth the effort

I started driving a motorcycle at 4 years old (yes FOUR), was driving tractors and a WWII tracked personel carrier by 8 years old, a car (on the farm) around 9 years old. I have no idea what to put on the poll, I drove on an expired permit to get a license on my 16th birthday.

I didn't get my license until I was 21. When I first tried to get my permit at 16 my Dad nearly gave me a heart attack yelling in the car so I stopped trying and didn't try again until 21. I'm not particularly(sp) fond of driving but it's so very useful.
