First things first:
I'm a self-confessed Fishermaniac. I go fishing year-round for all species in my area the season happens to be open for. Like Red Fisher would say: "Gotta feel the wobble of that lure... Talk to the fish"

If I had it my way, I'd be out fishing every day. For those really nasty days I suit-up in a full body rainsuit. I'm at it as soon as the ice clears off the lakes in spring and late into the fall until cold temperatures cause me to lose muscle control of my hands and risk my losing that expensive rod and reel.

I got introduced to it when I was 9 and havn't had enough of it since then.

I'm under the impression fishing must be very AS-compatible. It can be done solo or shared with friends / loved ones and there is no competition to it unless you enter a fishing tournament. Just that being deep in thought while hypnotically looking in the water to see if anything is following or anticipating the bite.

I'm curious to know how popular is the sport amongst Aspies. Maybe I'll see you out on the water

I've been very much into it since about 10. I've fished for just about everything, from small dace in a little stream, through cod from the beach, to Atlantic salmon on the Tweed in Scotland. I must have at least 30 different fishing rods, same number of reels, and all the other paraphernalia that goes with it.

Are there any good salmon rivers near you?

I've been out fishing five times and never caught a thing. That includes one deep sea fishing trip. I shreded up a bunch of feeder fish and stabbed myself a bunch of times on that trip for nothing. I might try a deep sea fishing trip again someday, but I'm still not counting on catching anything. Maybe I'll try shark fishing somewhere sometime (not just the fins :x ), and yes, I would plan on eating it! :P mmmm....shark.....*drools*

I don't like fishing. I like the quiet, I like nature, I like sitting waiting...

But I don't very much like to eat fish, so it's hard for me to justify hurting them in that way. I really dislike putting earthworms on a hook. The worms are my friends in the garden, and to impale one on a sharp hook an dthen dangle it in the water...I just can't do it! And then when I catch the fish, there the nasty and painful business of trying to get the hook out of the fish's mouth...

We have wonderful fishing up here and I just am not into it. My son, OTOH, is just wild about fishing.

ascan,

Yes, there is some good freshwater salmon fishing not too far from where I live (Lake Huron / Georgian Bay) but my only problem is I don't have a boat that will handle that big water.

I'm too far inland for ocean fishing but will certainly try it next time I travel to a seaside destination. btw- can you eat shark? I'd think the smaller ones could be quite edible.

theman,

I've never caught anything like what you show there but I have been at times tempted to wok the neighbor's dog :P or use it for muskie bait :P

I am also a fishaholic. I live in Pennsylvania and I fish for trout year round thanks to living semi-near a dam and hydro plant that pulls from the bottem of a 50-60 ft lake thus keeping the water a chilly 45-55 degrees year round. I also fish for bass, crappie and other panfish, and catfish in the hot sumer months. Do you get to do alot of pike fishing in Canada Papillon?? we do have some a bit further north from me, but I have never gone after them...it is definatly on my list.

Oh, and I also eat many of the trout/panfish that I catch...but not the catfish (to messy to clean and collect to many toxic chemicals in their bodies) or the bass (just gross)

stlf,

Pike fishing -yep! We sure do. They are very bony but I have a technique of filleting them so there are no bones. Talk about some tasty white meat!

We also have bass -smallmouth and largemouth both. I do find that once those pass the 2 1/2 lb mark, they get very gamy tasting so I just release the bigger ones.

I don't eat catfish either. Can't stand the soft texture of their flesh. I find it too mushy.

We also have lots of lakes and rivers with trout in them but I'm more of a Walleye fisher than anything else.

I don't really like catching fish when I'd never eat them. And I think it's cruel to catch them for fun and then throw 'em back. Seems pointless. Kinda like tying cans onto a dog's tail for enjoyment. The dog doesn't enjoy it.

But I would certainly find fishing useful. Especially if I actually liked eating fish. But since I don't, I don't do it.

I like fishing though I don't go fishing everyday. Though if I lived near a stream or lake I would fish everyday. I find it relaxing outdoors in nature.

From grades 10 to 11, fishing was my interest. I used to go down to the estuary after school each day and catch dinner for myself (I'd clean the fish and my mother would cook it for me); it kept me sane through my bad period at school.

My father also had a fishing boat on and off as I was growing up, so I'd follow him when he'd go out to sea.
