I like Punk, but i'm more into Goth and Deathrock.. A lot of it crosses over into Punk, though.. Especially a lot of the bands from the 80s. Goth/Deathrock used to be an obsession for me. I still listen to it(and wear a lot of black, lol), but it doesn't have "special interest" status anymore... Which is probably a good thing, because it caused me to go off into talks about the history of goth rock and gothic culture every time someone who associated the word "goth" with metal and/or manson used the word. Funny though, because i listened to the music and knew all about the history of the music, related subculture, and everything... But i didn't really hang out with a "goth" crowd or anything.. I just knew everything about it. For my 18th birthday, my mom took me to Georgia(two states away!) to see Bauhaus perform, though. Only real concert i've been to, 'cause they are one of my favorite bands ever. It was awesome, and i did talk to one older goth-lady there a little bit before the show.

As far as looking different and feeling different.. I have to say that feeling different is definitely a big part of why i want to dress the way i do. In high school i did the whole black lipstick thing and all.. had a deathhawk at one point... But now i don't wear any makeup or anything, and just have short hair. I have quite a few piercings, and when i'm away from work mostly wear black or other dark colors. I also prefer to dress in male clothing(though i am "female"). I usually don't relate very much to other people who dress similarly, with piercings and stuff, because they're generally all very socially functional and everything.. and definitely not "different" in the same ways that i am "different"... But i like that kind of thing, and i feel that i can better express my individuality through more "alternative" styles.. Regardless of whether or not i relate to most other "alternative" people. I guess i can relate to them more than i can to the average person though, because a lot of them are accepting of strangeness and are more likely to think having strange interests is "cool."

I like punk rock :D I don't think of myself as punk though, despite having dyed hair, tattoos, and lots of piercings.

Sure. The likes of Husker Du, Big Black, The Fall, Mission of Burma and Minutemen were all staples in my record collection as a teen. Being a Brit, I mostly discovered these bands through John Peel (god rest his soul) and the NME (which, conversely, should have been put out of its misery a good 15 years ago).

One song I particularly related to was Husker Du's "Whatever".

"He lives in his imagination with those friends of his very own
He doesn't get along with the outside world, he'd rather be alone
Sometimes when it's late at night, he starts to wonder why
the plans he made can never happen, so all he does is cry."

It wasn't until some years after I heard the album that song is from ("Zen Arcade") that I twigged it was based on Bob Mould's experience of growing up gay in a small town, but it could just as easily apply to the predicament of being a teenage aspie.

Hmm, as for anything remotely alternative (Well, I'd probably only go so far as to say alternative mainstream or mainstream alternative):

Radiohead
The Flaming Lips
Muse
Primal Scream
Spunge (ska-punk)

Have you heard the new Flaming Lips album? Mainstream doesn't enter into it. With one fell swoop I'd guess they've alianated a sizeable percentage of their more recent fans, and appeased a similar number of old ones (like me).

"Through the Glass" by Stone Sour has always been a song I can relate to fairly well... also "Everything is Alright" by Motion City Soundtrack... main lyrics to both that caught my attention:

Through the Glass (Okay, so this one is almost the entire song)

I'm looking at you through the glass
Don't know how much time has passed
Oh God it feels like forever
But no one ever tells you that forever feels like home
Sitting all alone inside your head

'Cause I'm looking at you through the glass
Don't know how much time has passed
All I know is that it feels like forever
But no one ever tells you that forever feels like home
Sitting all alone inside your head

How do you feel? That is the question
But I forget you don't expect an easy answer
When something like a soul becomes initialized
And folded up like paper dolls and little notes
You can't expect a bit of folks

So while you're outside looking in
Describing what you see
Remember what you're staring at is me

'Cause I'm looking at you through the glass
Don't know how much time has passed
All I know is that it feels like forever
But no one ever tells you that forever feels like home
Sitting all alone inside your head

How much is real? So much to question
An epidemic of the mannequins, contaminating everything
We thought came from the heart
But never did right from the start
Just listen to the noises
(Null and void instead of voices)

Before you tell yourself
It's just a different scene
Remember it's just different from what you've seen

Everything is Alright-Motion City Soundtrack

Tell me that you're alright,
Yeah everything is alright.
Oh please tell me that you're alright,
Yeah everything is alright.

Give me a reason to end this discussion,
To break with tradition.
To fold and divide.

Cause I hate the ocean, theme parks and airplanes,
Talking with strangers, waiting in line..
I'm through with these pills that make me sit still.
"Are you feeling fine?"
Yes, I feel just fine.

Tell me that you're alright,
Yeah everything is alright.
Oh please tell me that you're alright,
Yeah everything is alright.

I'm sick of the things I do when I'm nervous
Like cleaning the oven or checking my tires
Or counting the number of tiles in the ceiling..
Head for the hills, the kitchen's on fire!

I guess US Punk Hardcore/crossover was my formative influence....still lingers- as does the 4 bars tattoo (either you know what that is or not as it's kind of embarrassing now)

Sooo, name some favourite bands I guess, well Black Flag first and foremost, Gorilla Biscuits, Cro Mags, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Misfits, TSOL......along with some of the later things, Quicksand, Rival Schools, Fugazi, EARLY AFI (ie up to and including Black Sails at Sunset), Life of Agony, Helmet, Unsane etc etc

Although I think I'm much more laid back now, and definately have wider tastes. But I still listen to a lot of the old stuff and still am fond of it. I think I look fairly surface conventional- not much of the ink or piercings are actually on view , then again the US stuff was much less about the image.

punk and alternative music means the world to me; It makes me feel like I'm not completely alone! I'm a bit of a dork and some people think I'm weird and they don't understand my taste in music (which is pretty f-ing broad) so naturally I'm attracted to punk & underground music. I don't dress like a stereotypical "punk rocker", but it doesn't really matter what you look like.

I Prefer Grunge, a slow version of Punk, and Punk Music is kind of Angry Music, when I feel like Rebelling against my family.

I am more of a metalhead so I like a crap load of metal, but I do like punk as well and some of the sub-catagories/related genres like goth rock, psychobilly, post punk ect.

Then of course I love psychedelic rock and industrial music can be awesome.

As a kid I used to hang on the peripherals of the punk scene (and get mercilessly teased and taken the piss out of because of my naivety ...but was also accepted) in my home town in Essex (early 80's) I jumped straight in when I was of an age and had been accepted by the freaks lol :-)
Sex pistols, crass, conflict, siouxie, xray specs, stiff little fingers, the clash, so much more...
Also interested in the skinhead (non rascist),ska - two tone and psycho-billy and anything alternative

Yeah, I was punk to the bone. Sex Pistols, The Clash, Plasmatics, MDC, The Exploited, GBH, Dead Kennedys, Boomtown Rats, The Jam, DEVO, etc. Still listen to them, too.
