I was asked the other day what I enjoyed. So naturally I replied "Alison Krauss, Greek Mythology, and any books I can find." A few of the people in class started snickering and laughing. What's so strange about those interests? I just don't understand. It just makes me angry. I would not have responded that way to someone if they told me their interests.

What's so strange? They're not "NASCAR, football, and any girl I can get laid with." Don't worry, kid. I'm also bookish - some of my best friends in school were books.

I can relate to you about books being friends. I even imagine I am in the books, or the characters are with me! (But don't tell anyone!)

And it would be really creepy if my interest was "any girl I can get laid with..." I am a girl.

Hmm...when I said Alison Krauss I was referring to her music...not her as in I am in love with her. That could be taken that way, I think.

I know how you feel, i was reading 1984 in class and someone came along and hit me for it :\ its really annoying how people can be...

School is a jungle, but don't let it discourge you. You're surrounded by fools, and they make the rules. It can be useful to keep your esoteric interests to yourself if you don't want hasle from the bullies.

Just keep it in mind that they'll be life's losers in the end

Sometimes people laugh without meaning it to be cruel or even meaning a real putdown. It's sort of a right-of-passage. Being laughed at can mean an opening to acceptance ... and no, I can't describe exactly how to, with 100% accuracy, tell the difference in the moment. Maybe it is in how you handle it afterwards? Like if you laugh along with and roll with it. Come to think of it the above paragraph is sort of an example of it? But if they smell fear or defensiveness methinks you are sunk.

EDIT: Come to think of it if you don't understand the above then social environments like schools would seem really harsh and cruel even at the best of times. Hrmmm. Like the world was full of "bullies" when what was really happening was the world was full of people that you misunderstand the message from, and therefore the motives of.

I found out a long time ago, if you follow the crowd and do only what other people want you to do, you will never be happy. There are a lot of NT's out there that only do certain things because everybody else does it and it's the "IN" thing to do. I bet if you got some of them alone and found out what they really like, they would have wierd hobbies and interests too.

I can't think why that's so weird either. But I've been through that path before. Thinking about it, being obsessed with a sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea is very weird.

Bluegrass is a cutting edge approach to music with people in their 20s currently leading the way.

I think a major appeal beyond its feeling of energy is the fact that such a large part of its presentation is based on understanding improvisation. Its not a genre one plays off a printed page of music.

Eman ekaf, my fiddle playing friends tell me they remember Alison Krauss from back when she was a young child. Her parents used to bring her around to Bluegrass jams to play with all the adults. As a child she was state fiddle champion here in Illinois.

Precisely what I was getting at in the follow-up paragraphs. Laughing at her was the joke.


P.S. I really liked the Bare Naked Ladies cover of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" that they did in a sort of Bluegrass motif. So it can't be all bad, just need some solid lyrics to back up those strings. :^)

I think it was the Greek thing that they laughed about as most people in school don't realize that other cultures actually existed before the nineteenth century.

I am a fiddler, and Alison Krauss is my idol. I really like her earlier music, but she is still amazing. If only I had her voice, i'd be all set! I love going to jams. I also go to ones with adults, no other teens/kids.

Here's what I think, as a 41-year-old with self-diagnosed (but probably mild) AS,

Sometimes people are so worried about whether they fit in with the crowd, that they will laugh and snicker and at anything that's not the cookie-cutter popular thing that's in. Their laughter, I believe, is a way of saying, "Hey, guys...I enjoy the same things the rest of you do. I'm not different in any way, so you'll never have any reason to make fun of me." It's a case of those particular people being insecure about themselves and their own identity.

I agree; that's not weird at all. I had a Greek mythology phase myself when I was in sixth grade... never really learned a whole lot, because I got obsessed with astrophysics!

Heh. In any case, nothing to be ashamed of. People have a right to their interests.

yes being laughed at for what you say can be embarassing but it's not nearly as bad as being laughed at when you do something as simple as walking thru the door of the classroom and I have some experience in that area. Take heart things could be worse. Laughter is one thing, stones are another thing altogether.
