When you dress or pick out clothes at a store, do you think of an entire outfit, or each individual piece of clothing?
Also, do you dress to fit in, to be like something, or for what you like for each piece of clothing?

People often tell me I am preppy, gothic, punk, gangster, redneck, etc. But I don't try to fit into any sort of category, I just pick out each thing I like and put it together.

For instance, I'll want to to feel nice and clean and I'll wear a nice button down shirt - but people say I am preppy (little do they know I took off the quicksilver logo so if its anything its skater)

I like dragons, so I'll wear a dragon shirt - people say I am gothic, alternative, punk, etc

I'll wear Airwalk shoes because they are cheap and basic - people say I am a skater

I'll wear a Dodge hat - people say I am a redneck

People ask me what I am or they insist on telling me what I am, and all I can think is I am me and they can't seem to grasp that.

I never really understood the need to label anything, why do we need to fit into a box.. I wish everyone were free to just be themselves, life would be so much more interesting that way.. but I think that people have a hard time understanding you if you don't fit into a box.

I have never been a trend follower and always dress or decorate to please myself (I hate it when something I like or do becomes trendy because then I feel the need to change because then it seems silly) my first consideration is always comfort, if something doesn't feel good, I don't want it.

As for labels I've been given, it depends on what I am currently doing.. when I had blond hair I was labeled as an airhead and treated like I was stupid and a bimbo (the most forgiving of my social issues people have ever been).. when my hair is dark brown I am labeled as intelligent, quirky and shy.. when I dress in sophisticated clothes people think I am stuck up, arrogant and priveledged!? when I wear anything that is sexy or revealing, people treat me like I am one of the popular girls that everyone wants to be friends with!? and Men act like I am trying to pick up on them (I am not the type to do that, I have always dated guys that were friends first).. when I wear makeup women are so much nicer to me than when I am all natural!? (I look the same either way, makeup doesn't change the way my face looks, just adds a little color, in fact I probably look better without it).. basically I think that (typical) people project onto others whatever makes them feel better about themselves (for example if you are too attractive then you can't also be intelligent and kind), most people need to find something to dislike about you, even if they like you.

Labels are stupid and probably the most limiting, destructive single thing in our world, if we could stop labeling and just see everything as it is, we wouldn't have any reason left for wars, separation, cruelty, exclusion, stupid choices that destroy our environment and on and on, even the the current state of our economy can be blamed on people trying to hard to be something they are not or needing to wear the right label, the excesses on wall street stem from the bankers needing to be cooler (superior) to the next guy.. who buys a $1400 paper (excuse me 'parchment) waste basket--- STUPID, they are all idiots.

Okay, sorry! finished with rant now.. great question btw.

I don't buy clothes in stores, I scavenge them. If it's cool, I take it home. If I like it, I keep it.

Nothing I own matches.

i pretty much wear the same thing all the time. jeans or cotton work pants with mens singlets. everything is cotton. most tags are cut off unless they are very soft and do not prickle. i hate synthetic.

now, i have one outfit for when i go to the city for work. all black.

i have many clothes and many shoes - all of which are bought as i would buy objects. they are not worn however.

in my teenage years i collected vintage clothes -- long before it was fashionable. i had an incredile collection of clothes and then one day i just gave them all away. (this coincided with a new special interest.)

In summer -as it is subtropical where i am - i wear pink thongs (the colour can change however.) I have one pair of on reserve sandals that i wear if i cannot wear thongs.
in winter i wear mens blundstone boots which are workboots.

i wear my tattoos all the time and cannot remove them.

i am a stickler for routine wear.

and i always wear a cowgirl hat.
and big sunnies.

same same same same same.
i also wear mens cotton pj's around the house a lot and i also paint in these in the studio too (but i jsut classify them as cotton pants. always striped and always pure cotton.)

everything has oil paint stains and marks. everything...at least somewhere on the garment.

My wardrobe is mostly black. I buy black dye and wash them in that when they start to fade.
I like cotton/spandex clothes. I'm no way goth, although I have a dark sense of humor.
Black clothes just look more clean and together. Wrinkled clothes make me feel like I don't have it together. I'd say my personality is more Bohemian and I like the bohemian look but when I wear those sorts of clothes I just feel like I rolled out of bed and the whole day has a slacker feel to it.

I've always preferred having to wear uniforms. Most of my jobs required me to wear all black.
I hate lab coats. If they are not neatly pressed you look like you need to get it together.
Stains are a problem for me too. I should carry a bib...

Anyways...if all you wear is black and if it's not wrinkled or faded you'll look neat and smarter than you may actually be.

I like 'daytime pyjamas', like what they wear in Asia, a shirt and some baggy pants.

I'm also a huge dressing gown lover.

I have a couple of "uniforms" that I cycle through, depending on the situation.

One is khaki pants and a white t-shirt.
Another would be pajama pants and a flannel shirt.
Yet a third would be jeans and a brown shirt.

I suppose I do conceptualize my clothing choices as a whole.

And I've long since lost any consideration for trends, fads, and popular phenomena.
Come to think of it, I never had any consideration for these things.

It would be cool if we all had to dress like we were on Star Trek. It would definitely make people want to stay in shape.

I must admit at I did used to dress emo and indie, but those days are over.

I dress in what makes me feel comfortable and sometimes I might dress in something to catch someone's eye.

I get labeled by people too.

I wear Macbeth shoes, for support, but people call me emo.
I wear a checkered shirt and get called a Cowboy. It was actually a Dangerfield shirt, which is in style, people in my town don't know that though.

I'm all over the shop style wise. Atm I'm wearing mens skate shoes, a girly looking (almost pre-teen looking) white top with pastel hearts, and a gothic looking hanky-hem skirt with tights underneath. With my hair tied back all "school teacher-like" (as my dad calls it)
So I guess people will label me as a gothic, skaterpunk, girly school marm :P

I have lot of clothes I don't wear because I prefer to wear things that match. I don't keep up in fashion and I wear what I like. I don't wear men clothes. I have clothes that teens would wear and I have some grown up clothes.

I dress in stuff that I like, but usually shorts/pants and a tee. I love Converse shoes (skater type) and my Docs too (the best cost per wear shoes ever Im on to my second pair in ten years).

I dress by piece of clothing. If I need clothing at the time, the clothing item is comfortable, and I wouldn't feel like a complete moron wearing it, I'll buy it. I don't bother with an image other than what I want to feel like and see myself as, and it certainly doesn't have a label. If other people like it, great. If they think I look like an idiot and I happen to disagree, I don't listen to them. Makes things a lot easier, I think.

I pick out what is going to annoy me the least. Usually plain solid colored T-shirts. Dark colors are good: blue, red, green, black. Jeans of some sort, a blue or black color. I like to wear hats on bad hair days. I wear a black leather jacket (I do wonder what some people think about me wearing it though). I was never into leather jackets, until I was given one many years ago without expecting or desiring one.

I have pretty much wore the same shirt and pants every day I've gone somewhere for the last 5 months. Black T-shirt, black jeans. I do so because they work. I don't dress to present an image (as mentioned before though, I wonder what my leather jacket does!). I do however walk to present an image (that is not befitting of my character, and partially to be left alone).

I usually pick the entire outfit. Unless of course I can't spontaneously think of a whole outfit and have to put it together.

I don't get labelled like that. I guess I look about normal, though not quite so. I have a lot more colourful, glittering, childish and non-modern clothing than others my age.
