(VIDEO) Epiphany: Defecits become Strengths
Why am I the only one to reply to this thread? Am I again missing some unspoken rule that says we shouldn't post here?
Anyway, I didn't understand the spoken English in the video so I can't comment (it's hard for me to understand spoken American English), but I do agree that some deficits can become strengths for us Aspies.
Sorry if replying was inappropriate I really missed the nonverbal cue....

I doubt there is such a rule.
Well, the signal/noise ratio was LOW, he spoke softly, etc.... Granted, I was listening to this on an EEE PC(they have REAL low volume), but I hsd trouble listening also. Basically, all he said was that even the odd quirks, etc..., that seem to be DEFICITS can be an advantage. BTW he WAS vague, though that was probably intentional. It could mean NOT ONLY the idea that like obsessive journalling could lead to a nice book, etc.... But ALSO that a problem with math could lead to an obsession could make you build that deficit into a proficiency with math.
And you have trouble just with AMERICAN english? I would think that that would be EASIER in most cases, like alex.
again, I DOUBT it. And I am sure that Alex knows we have such problems anyway. He DOES have AS, after all....

Some people might be intimidated by posting in a thread an admin or mod made, or responding to an admin/mod in a 'negative' manner, or even responding at all due to being afraid of what the admin/mod would do/say in response. That's why some forum admins rarely post as the admin account but post as a regular dude (registering a 'member' account) and mainly posting as that, sometimes not telling people they're the admin or mod while using a regular account.
Authority and hierachy and all that.
Also note the admins' behavior and actions affect this. If the admins are nice, this does not apply. If they're jackasses and mean a lot this happens more often.
In this case it's likely no one was interested enough to post ans also the OP was made at ~12AM server time and 5 AM was when you responded. not a lot of people on-line in the USA then (where a lot of people here are from)

Thank you guys for the answers! That puts me at ease.
Warsie, I think it's the first time I see someone spell "Affect" right, instead of confusing it with "Effect".

Which won't happen much if the people in question have an ASD. The whole, can't see authority thingy, and treating everyone as an equal.
The message is somewhat self-evident, i.e., strengths and weaknesses all depend on how you look at them, and strength can easily equate to weakness if seen through a different situation or light. I haven't seen the video however, as my 'net is slow at the moment.
2uk, I understand spoken British English better because they mark and separate their words more, and also because that's the English I learned as a child. American English sounds like roar-roar-roar to me, and South African sounds yalk-yalk-yalk. Australian/New Zealand is not bad. Then cockney is incomprehensible to me, and the most difficult of all is pidgin' English. When black people talk I don't understand one word, even though I have a bachelor's in English language and was made to study the major kinds of spoken English.

feel free to respond in any manner you feel fit. I don't care.
I liked the idea of videotaping oneself presenting the OP of a thread! I may buy a cam and start all my threads like that, I think it's really nice.

Unrelated to the topic, I'm continually amazed around here by how many people from non-English speaking countries are so skilled with the English language.

Well, Africa isn't officially an english speaking nation. cockney is a shortened form that many may have problems with. It may have odd slang, cadence, and silent parts. America DOES speak english and MOST now, like Alex, speak it with no real affectation. As for blacks? Did you see blackcat's statements here earlier? She got in trouble, because she spoke too clearly! It turns out SHE is black. Some blacks PRIDE themselves on speaking in a wierd language and earlier, instead of calling it a PIDGEON of english, they tried to call it ebonics! Heck, many AMERICANS have problems with understanding that.
Heck, most WHITE families in the US had to learn english. I don't know why some blacks BORN here consider it a white thing. perhaps 100 years or so ago my family spoke mostly gaelic and German. And my maternal mother is a bit ashamed because she is believed to be "horror of horrors" part french!(I hope the frnch here realize I mean "horror of horrors" as a kind of joke. SHE is devout catholic, and the french are known for being protestant, so it is a catholic ethnic thing, and NOT meant as an insult.) Of course, part of my family probably ended up in england as well, and some english may have ended up in germany and ireland, but you can't say my family always spoke English, even though I am white.
Still, it is interesting because some british use more slang and more local references, and a lot of americans feel that american english is slower, ect.... Go figure. I guesss you can't please everyone.
CW, it's only me actually whose English is so good as a non-native
2uk, that was a fascinating read! I thought that Americans could understand pidgin' English naturally. At work, we ask African customers when they call us on the phone to enter the messenger chat so the conversation is written and we can understand them.

You're right Alex - some of the things that cause problems when younger can turn into massive strengths when we're older. If we can just get past the fear (having been tormented when young produces a lot of residual fear), and pursue the things we do well, a bit of single-mindedness and obsession can work wonders for developing skill. I used to try to hide the struggles that I have, but often people really admire those who struggle and keep trying.

that true. However, some on here might have adjusted to forums with a stronger authority figure in the forums, however seeing how they do things. e.g. seeing others suck the dick fo authority in the forums and seeing how they get treated vs. dissenters in those environments by the admin.

To be fair, when you were studying that AAVE was probably not considered a dialect of English due to racism and all. Until that Oakland declaration in the late 1970s at least. Also some right-wingers in the USA now, as well as uncle toms still consider AAVE to be 'broken' english and b***h about 'political correctness'
there probably is a college offering AAVE classes. I wish there was one at my current college..

But seriously, many admins don't. Then again you put 'developer' instead of 'admin' for your title intentionally to prevent that problem.
Back to silly time; I herd u liek mudkipz.
Some can. It depends on how much experience they have with AAVE speaking. Example, someone who works in a Harold's Chicken (local fast food restaurant in Chicago's south side) would do better at this than someone who worked at a 'high-class' restaurant in the Water Tower place in the city center.
White people from the rich outer suburbs, or from different cities will be wondering WTF is going on. I think Ive noticed that myself when they look confused at other people talking or simply being in a majority black area.
HAHAAHAHAHA
many parts of Africa have English and French as an official language.
she's autistic too. Her speech formatting is different, similar in my case apparently.
lol @ 'weird language'. Yes it's a pidgin, the official term for Ebonics is now AAVE.
Because it was forced on them centuries ago. That and the dialect differences.
wait...british use more slang

I studied "Pidgin' English" 20 years ago at university. That was the official name the professors gave it.
Why was pidgin' English forced on black people in your country?
And why do black people sing so much more beautifully than other races? I once called a customer in Africa and as we discussed business I could hear the most beautiful singing in the background I'd heard in many years. I interrupted the conversation to ask him where I could buy the CD. He said he was just sitting at his little daughter's school function and that it was nothing special, no one professional was singing and they weren't particularly good.
