I apologize if this topic is a dead horse somewhere else on the site, I hadn't seen it as of yet.

My BF won't drive, he went on only one lesson and although he was fine at it...he just shut the idea down after that one jaunt in a parking lot.

He feels his vision is too poor, his ability to keep focused on all that driving entails...and mainly I think it just stresses him out, which is fine no pressure here.

What are your experiences with driving?

I LOVE driving.

Your bf sounds very uncomfortable behind the wheel. If he doesn't like to drive it's prolly for a good reason, he has doubts about it. People know what's best for them.

Nope.

I can drive a boat though (there's too much to keep track of on the road, visually and mentally, and since I'm of the focused mindset, it's easy to see why driving overwhelms me).

I enjoy driving at times when the roads aren't too busy. The other drivers here tend to be very rushed, they run stop signs and fail to yield when they're supposed to (Boston drivers have a bad reputation, so I'm not the only one who thinks they're jerks) but when there aren't too many other drivers out I find driving relaxing.

Oh, and I'm not rushed cuz I'm on disability and have all day. It's all those OTHER Boston drivers who are jerks

I'm 29 and have been driving legally since I was 20. Kind of a late bloomer in that regard but only because I couldn't afford a car back then so my parents drove me around. I actually started learning to drive when I was 13, so I had a lot of experience with it alredy. It took me FOREVER to learn to drive with only 1 foot, as I kept wanting to have one foot on the brake at all times. And I still do not have the coordination to drive a stick. I practiced so much, many people tried to teach me, and every time I'd try I would just stall the car out. It never failed. I am also a sucky, sucky driver to most people. I drive too fast and aggressively most of the time, and I do not appear to know the traffic laws even though I really do.

I like driving when people don't drive dangerously around me.

I love to drive. I can 'become one' with the machine, too! I enjoy handling a high powered vehicle with excellent steering and a good set of tires. I go on extended road trips willingly and have often wondered if I haven't missed my calling as a long haul truck driver. The isolation and the long stretches with no 'residence' but the cab of my truck seems idyllic.

I don't mind driving in rural areas, and small towns where there isn't a lot of traffic. However, I can't drive in metro areas. It's just too much for me to keep up with. I get completely overwhelmed. I can't seem to be able to divide my attention up. It's a lot of multitasking with paying attention to where I'm going, where I need to go next, other drivers, and telling my arms, and legs to do what they need to do simultaneously. I also have absolutely no sense of direction, and will get lost in places that I've been to hundreds of times. It's so bad that I won't even go to a mall, or a zoo by myself, because I know that I won't be able to find my way around, or back out. Others are so convinced that I just have a phobia of driving, and if I'd just try to do it more I'd get used to it. That really irritates me, as it's not that I have a phobia of driving in and of itself. It's that I KNOW that I'm not a safe driver. I've been driving for almost 16 yrs, so it's not from lack of experience.

I always hated it - I was too overwhelmed. Anyway they took my license 8 years ago due to my physical health anyway.

I just started to learn. Of course it's only theory so far, I have no problem with that, but I have my doubts about the practice part, but I'm excited. We'll see.

I refuse to drive large vehicles due to problems judging distant. Did I ever mention I used to do bumper cars when I started driving? Is that common in new drivers anyway, AS or not? Luckily I never crashed hard into cars it would leave damage.

But I am never happy driving in big cities such as my area. It's heaven when there isn't much traffic.

I drive. In fact, I am licensed to drive single vehicles of all sizes, buses, school buses, and liquid tank trucks (I did not keep the Haz Mat endorsement because of the expense and annoyances involved).

However, if you BF is not comfortable with driving then it is best to not push the issue. Especially true if there is good public transit in your area. Driving can cause people to act weird and even have panic attacks.

I dislike stop-start traffic. My driving has evolved since I started. Now with all the cars around me, none are correct for the UK. My next car may very well have to be Japanese for handling and performance. The European cars here are designed to be left hand drive, so most of it is ok when you transfer to the right, but is a problem when they leave stuff out. Like the stalks. The indicator is supposed to be next to the window. The cars in the UK have the indicator stalk the same as the continent. Many people who get into an Asian car swear that the controls for the stalks is "wrong" because they are used to the wrong way round. Why is it Asian manufacturers can be bothered to modify the stalks but European cars are not?

I started with bikes, and go-karts, andd taking them apart (to fix of course) then on to driving. Many people are scared on their first lesson. There is a lot to take in. Which is why the instructor takes them to a quiet spot to talk and discuss what they want to learner to do and how some things work (only the ones that will be used) Some people forget that getting a car to move off slowly is an achievement in itself. They take it for granted like they do when walking... Everyone has to learn eventually
