They appear to be human eyes in mine.

My son never looks at the camera, even when the flash well... flashes ! He is also looking to the side or somewhere in space. Don't have a single pic of him - even as a 6-month-old - looking at the camera :(

But he is a little cutie, regardless, and very photogenic ! ! :)
The flash might hurt his eyes, just thinking.

Wouldn't he then appear in the pictures with his eyes closed when the flash goes off ?

He actually seems to consciously avoid looking at the camera. I wonder why ?

The only thing i can think of is maybe the flash does affect him but the reactions are internal and he's trying to minimalize them
It kind of happens to me,eg.sounds may give me a thump of anxiety in my chest but only the very loud ones cause me to cringe as well.
Apart from that i don't know.does he have a hard time with eye contact?maybe he sees the camera as eyes

No, we normally get pretty good eye contact (just hope I haven't jinxed it now), so I don't know what the deal is with looking AT the camera. I will try to post some photos of him, and maybe someone can weigh in.

Took these photos barely 5 minutes ago with my IPAD. He KNEW I was attempting to click him, and despite my repeated pleas to look at the camera, he consciously looked away.

Maybe that's the point? Maybe the pleas make him nervous?

Did you try a different approach and a different way of taking the photo? Try this experiment:
Try to take a photo without a "warning" first, but make it obvious in a nonverbal way by grabbing the camera and asking him to stand over there or something like that. Take a photo the fast way (fast enough to not give him time to feel "intimidated" by the camera but long enough as to not make it blurry) and look at the result.
Another time, let him know some minutes beforehand that you would like to take a photo of him (on the other hand, it can be he needs some time to prepare mentally), do so (the same fast way as I mentioned above) without asking him to look at the camera.
Then try the same sometime later the way you usually do (also fast) and compare which one turns out the most promising.

Those are just some silly ideas, but maybe one of that will give you an answer as to why he is looking away?

Hismom, His eyes are gorgeous. They really are. Very deep and mysterious.

Maybe he is responding to the noise of the click rather than to the light of the flash. Perhaps he is hearing it bounce off of something and maybe he is following the sound. His hearing may be particularly sensitive to certain sounds. There have been times when I am doing something or I am in a conversation and I hear the slightest sound or echo and I can't resist looking for where it is coming from.

Thank you. He is certainly good looking (even if I do say so myself) ! !

He kept turning his head away every time I moved the IPAD towards him... It became an obvious game, so I know he is doing this on purpose.... Are there soundless cameras in the market, by any chance ?

This weekend, I decided to look through more pictures from my childhood. I grew up in the 1960s. So, it wasn't like there were hundreds of pictures from each year. Maybe a dozen or two from each year. At some point (between ages of 3 and 4), I learned to look at the camera and smile.

Try the Ipad on video and see if he notices. I don't think you can get a clickless camera. The shutter is what clicks. If you can get one it's probably going to cost way too much. I think maybe wildlife photographers might have ways to muffle the click but I am sure those options are way more than you would want to pay for.

Here's a couple pics of me when I was a kid. I don't really like having to stand there and "pose" when I know someone's taking my picture. I prefer "candid" pics. I find it much more "real" and truly captures the moment.

I tried to upload 4 shots of me as a toddler with that blank stare but it doesn't seem to be working. I might try again later.
