I just thought I'd share this. In the midst of my assessment my psychologist asked me,

"What goes on the surface of a road?"

She wouldn't give me any clues. I was a bit puzzled, and then I answered,

"The tarmac and then white lines"

Apparently, NT people will answer this question by saying 'vehicles/traffic'.

Most people with Aspergers will tend to say tyres.

I picked my answer because I figured that roads are made of several layers, and that the tarmac and white lines would make up the surface layer...

What answer do you get?

To me surface means the top-layer - as in they're resurfacing the road.
I think most people - NT or AS would say something along the lines of asphalt or tarmac.
She's talking rubbish, IMO.

I asked my dad, "if you're in a psychologist office and they ask you 'what goes on the road?', what would you say?"

He said: "a band".

:D

Asphalt was my first thought.

Just one word change and it has en entirely different meaning. If the question were, "What goes on THE road?" I would have said band too. "What goes on A road" wouldn't give the answer of "a band."

My first thought was asphalt. I pictured in my mind an oblique shot taken from above, showing the black, shiny surface of the road.

If the question is specifically "What goes on the road?"

Car is not the most logical answer - Tar, Tarmac, concrete or asphalt (same difference) is.

The blacktop goes ON the road. Goes meaning BELONGS. Meaning IS EXPECTED TO BE PLACED UPON AS A NATURAL PART OF (LAYER).

Please pay more attention, Willard. The question refers to the road surface.

I believe that's precisely what I was saying, Mister 'Pay-More-Attention'. The asphalt IS the road's surface. The road exists even without the asphalt.

I reiterate. Cars DRIVE on the road, or GO at varying rates of speed (on road or off). They do not add nor detract from the road's inherent existence (thought it could be said they help give it context and meaning). Don't be a self-righteous dope. your point-of-view is not the only one.

The image of a road surface was the first thing that popped into my mind as viewed from ground level. The words followed - I just said what I saw - tar and road markings.
