My avatar and user name work together to create something like a poetic post-it note to myself. Though most people I talk to get bored and/or irritated when I explain the multiple layers of symbolism--so I'll try not to ramble.

Dark red is both my favorite color and my editing pen's color. Beloved by Toni Morrison is written in a non-linear fashion breaking the rules of strict narrative--which is how I think. Leanan sidhe reflects my literary bent once again as she's the muse of poets (along with many other kinds of artists). But what really draws me to the image, is the way she doesn't hide her power, beauty, and mystery just because a few people fear what they don't understand.

I am an avatarphile :).

I have had a couple of myself but get weary of seeing my sorry mug every time I make a post.

I tend to gravitate either toward butterflies or paintings of women that resemble me a little.

I've always been fascinated by several key things; Symbols, Monsters, the colour black, the Occult and Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. I feel this avatar combines those things quite nicely. Also, it's not particularly pleasant looking, which suits my standoffish attitude and discomforting nature.

Now that you fools have voted for Barack Obama instead of me I might have to change my avatar.

I would have a picture of myself as an avatar but I don't have a recent one and none of the ones I do have are the right size (and I don't know how to resize). I chose this one because it plays into the username somewhat.

I don't use a photo of myself simply because I never relate to the face being me anyway.

So I tend to pick abstract photos that I find appealing.

About due for a change of photo again now though, I'm getting bored with the baobab trees.

I wouldn't want to distract people with my super sexy face. Also Super Sonic is awesome. He's still sonic but faster and invincible and also gold =D

He's also very similar to super saiyans from DBZ.

Yeah, they call it the fetal position.

Anyways, I'm a big sonic fan myself, I am pretty much the aspie incarnation of sonic.

I think that an avatar is a 60x60 pixel mental projection of one's inner self. I think that, for some people, it makes their personality easier to sum up, where as a picture of them would only show you just that: a picture of them. For example, if you seen a picture of me, you would think that i am your average, hunky-dorie, nothing-doing kind of guy. That could not be more wrong. So it is a quick and easy way to say "hi, this is me, and this is a little window into my soul, to help you understand what i am like".

Oh yeah, and Sonic the Hedgehog kicks ass; well, at least he DID, before they started having the characters talk...

This thing over here is actually the official emblem of the 50th Space Wing of the United States Air Force. I've corrupted its meaning slightly to indicate that I am a person who is apparently an expert at "spacing-out".

Plus, it's just such a preposterous statement, you know...

whoops, thinking of my old avatar. this is the one i use for my profile for a modding community i use. i choose it because it looked kinda like a signil stone from the game i mod.. that and i was just looking for a animated avatar and like the look of this one.

mine's an actual photo of me! woot!!

...that's about 2 years old. I chose it cause of all the pictures of myself on my computer, I like my smile the best in this one.

Usually though, I don't use a photo, mainly cause my photos don't really say very much. I see avatar pictures, or icons, to be representative to begin with, and so not requiring actual photos.
I have a large icon collection, however, I don't use icons/avatars that others have made very often. This is because I see those as being representative of those that created them, even if the creator has taken images from other sources such as anime, movies, etc, and adjusted them to be their own, to say something about themselves through the source and the image.
And so, I usually use icons/avatars that I've made.

For a few forums, I use photo pictures because I want it to be more than just a representation, but to be directly identified with what I post. In other words, taking more direct responsibility for what I say.
