People have a hard time telling whether I am serious or being sarcastic. Apparently, they tell me, I just don't know how to be sarcastic like they are.

This is where having a monotone voice can really ruin a joke. It sounds sarcastic to the core in my head, but it comes out as bland as a Stepford wife.

I have failed at attempted sarcasm at times. My sense of humour and wit just aren't very sharp.

I always fail at sarcasm on the internet. Using a  takes something away from the intended impact in my mind but I guess people need it in order to not take me literally. Something about my writing style must make it sound like I'm always super serious.

In person people who don't know me well take me too seriously as well.

Ahh, yes, the emoticons. On the forum I visit most, use of the 'rolling eyes' smiley is frowned upon (because it's been ABused too often), but I often find I have to add a winking smiley, a 'stick-out-tongue' smiley or a 'big grin', to make sure everyone knows I'm just joking, and not actually trying to hurt anyone's feelings. And I'll STILL get replies like 'Gee, could you just let it go' or 'Why are you tilting at windmills?'.

Why no, not at all...

Either people take what I say as sarcastic, when I actually say something normal.
Or people think I'm being serious when saying something sarcastic.
Not all the time, but enough to notice.

I'm sarcastic most of the time. I can keep at expressionless face when saying something sarcastic that it gets an even better response from people. As a kid I barely spoke but would say one little comment that would have my siblings rolling on the floor with laughter.
I don't like too much sarcasm though, like when people start saying hurtful things. I still take it literally.

i think i know what it means, but i am not sure.

i think sarcastic means when you talk in an apparently serious tone but in a joking way about things that are annoying.

i always talk in a serious and non jocular way about things that i find hilarious about a situation.

people think i am serious however.
sarcasm does not work when i try it.

the last time i tried a "sarcastic joke" it failed with almost catastrophic proportion.

i was at a business lunch and the owner of the business was making jokes about my page boy hair style.

he was calling me little lord fauntleroy, and after i had imbibed some champagne i decided to try to be "sarcastic" because he was talking about my hair but he had none on the top of his head.

i got my comb out and asked him to look at the floor so as i could comb my hair (in a serious tone of voice). (my inference was that his bald head was shiny enough for me to see my reflection in).

the whole room went silent and that boss said "yes mark i think you'd better sit down mate!!"

other people looked at me as if i had just been killed, but i do not know why this all went wrong.

i can not do believable sarcasm

What a jerk. I think that guy deserved it.

One of my favorite situations (I'm being sarcastic here) is when I say something and the entire group cracks up in response..not because I've messed up and they are laughing at me in a mocking way, but because whatever I've said has been (mis)interpreted as "wicked sharp comeback" sarcasm. So I end up standing there either (a) playing along like "Ha hah hah--yeah, I really 'got' him/her, didn't I?" (even though I have no idea how what I have said is/was sarcastic), or (b) insisting that I didn't mean it the way that it was just (mis)taken, which prompts the roars of laughter to go even higher as they all do the "Yeah, *sure* you didn't mean it--stop it! You're killing us with your wicked humor!"

I consider myself decent at sarcasm, but sometimes people don't get it.
But I'm better at using it than at understanding it when someone else uses it.

Usually when I use sarcasm I come across as a complete b***h, as opposed to someone who's being whitty. An example would be when we were all sent out of class(everyone in the language department was) and my friend said, 'Is there a fire or something' and I said, 'yeah, we're all going out of the spacious rooms into a confined space and talking about what's going on while the teacher's get pissed off at us because there's a fire...' and that was perceived as something rather bitchy, tbh, though it was suppose to be a joke. I'd be lying if I didn't find the person's commentary and questions annoying though, she comes up with some stupid things and I think she knows there stupid :/.

I used to be sarcastic. It was never nice, and always at the expense of someone else's dignity and/or self-esteem, and I always came off as a sneering b***h.

Having gone through a lot of therapy, I find that now I really do hate sarcasm, and I truly think the world would be a lot nicer to live in if people watched what they said. I know that my world is nicer now, since I stopped using it.

As for the definition of sarcasm, this is from dictionary dot com:

1. harsh or bitter derision or irony.
2. a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark

and

1. A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
2. A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.

As far as I can tell, there isn't anything nice about it. Sarcasm should never be confused with humour, it's as different as night and day.

Cheers. :pr:

That's generally how I use it. My life is often full of irony, thus, the sarcasm.

My humor is ironic in the British style, which does not play well in America, as it is often mistaken for sarcasm. My sarcasm is sometimes taken seriously. Often, people don't whether I'm joking or not. Neither do I.
