On the light side, I want to give you an idea for a joke: How about taking a short selection from the "You might be an aspie if..." thread?

Definitely.
Cure all Olympic athletes at once. They're definitely not normal. Nowhere near it.
Ah. Now you tell me *sometimes* it's good not to be normal.
Ok. Who gets to decide?

Nonononono, I'm not *saying* that myself, I'm saying that's that's what society often thinks of people. Geez. I agree with you.

And I'm agreeing with you! My response to the common, not your, attitude, is to show up it's illogicality when applied unthinkingly. As with the Einstein story, it's there because I thought you might like it, not because it's directed at you.

Apologies.

I haven't really got any smashing stories-- at least none which are particularly Asperger-related. Maybe by the time I'm 80 (longevity providing) I will. But I guess that'll be a bit late for your talk. Sorry 'bout that.

Now that the number of children with autism/asperger's has shot through the roof, I think that seminars for all grade levels should be given in schools. Hopefully, more education would help cut down on bullying & teasing.

If you want some interesting stories, you can go searching in the Romance forum. I'd let you use a few of mine if you wanted to.

Hey gang! Thanks for the input.

It went really well. I ended up preparing some index cards (well, cut up manilla folders, since my mom wouldn't get me index cards ;) ) and just referring to them as I talked. I ended up opening with my personal stuff and then moving into the issues we've mentioned here. I worked really hard to drive my points in with stories and language and stuff.

After the actual talk, there was discussion and q&a, and everybody was tremendously nice and asked some good questions. I got complimented a lot and thanked. Check out this email I got after:

Quote:
Dan, I just wanted to write and thank you again for the amazing presentation today. I feel as if we've only scratched the surface. We have so much to learn from you. You are a confident, funny, and knowledgeable speaker. I think you have a great deal to offer, and as you could see today, we hope to take advantage of that! But given that we do not want to take advantage of YOU, we will try to figure out a way to make it a rewarding experience for you to continue your association with HCRS.

Holy crap!

Anyway, so I'll be able to talk to them more. This is cool because they're people who actually work with AS kids, and they weren't aware of a lot of the issues I talked about (of which people here, on the other hand, are generally more than aware of). I think I can chalk this one up as a success.

How many adults with AS give talks? I went to the AANE gathering a few months ago and several people there said I was articulate enough to give talks on Asperger's. The only obstacle at this point was the simple fact that I don't have a formal diagnosis.
