Just be yourself, and like Learning2Survive said, find a group with the right people where you will fit in.

Agreed.

Trying to act NT messes me up. I constantly worry about my behaviour, whether I'm acting too detached or too intense, whether I'm using the right tone with people, whether I'm saying the right things, etc.

Down with homogenized normality.

Unless you're actually doing something antisocial or destructive, don't try and change yourself to fit in.

Like MG and L2S said, find a group with the same mentality as you or people who are focused on the same thing as you, and you'll be fine.

Something I found that helps is going to a specific activity rather than just trying to socialize. I find it way easier to bond with people by doing something together rather than talking and hanging out. Less opportunity for my ASDish traits to mess something up.

I am finding small town life much better than the city. Maybe eventually the quirks will start to compound in peoples judgement of me. Which may have led to the nickname. So I will try to avoid over exposing myself.

I think the joining a group suggestion wont work for me. Groups tend to have the same issues as wider society. Groups consist of subgroups and couples. So the isolation is only more intense. There is less ability to control the situation. Over exposure to the aspie side will come quicker as will the put downs.
