there is a big gathering at the Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, OR. I have to work (for incidentals like rent and internet access, food, that sort of thing) or I would take the bus up for the day.

Oh, I didn't know that and I live right by the square (well, pretty close. I'm actually on the waterfront). I think I'll go down there and wear my tinfoil hat!

You know...

Maybe bigotry gives you a mental boost, but please keep it to yourself.

And I suspect you're mostly joking, but people don't take kindly to that around here, especially about this particular issue.

Writing that Aspies are superior is bigotry? Aspies don't take it too kindly when someone writes that aspies are superior? Very confusing

I take pride in my autism every day. What are you talking about?

Does anyone know if Northern Nevada ever has any events for APD?

Yes, because it implies that "non-Aspies" are inferior. I don't feel that way, and I don't think most people here feel that way, either. The Aspie superiority complex goes hand-in-hand with NT bashing and intolerance.

I take pride in being me, and that includes the autistic parts of me (whichever those are). I don't have a problem with Autistic Pride Day, either. I think it's great that people want to take a day out of their lives to remember that life is worth celebrating. Ideally it would be every day, but sometimes people need an event to be reminded that it's okay to be yourself.

I do, however, have a problem with people who seem to think that "Aspies" are somehow better than "NTs," that somehow they are the next step in human evolution, that they are species hybrids, etc. Such ideas surely only exist to make people with AS feel better about their own insecurities, much the way bullying makes some feel better about themselves.

Does this have anything to do with you being an NT? It probably does.

I don't see what wrong with people with asperger's writing on a site that geared towards people with asperger's or autism, that "Aspies are superior." I think you have missed that many people on this site feel that they are inferior to NT's, like yourself

First of all, what makes you think I am NT? My position? You don't have to look hard on this forum to find others that would say the same thing. Secondly, was that comment intended to be derogatory?

I am truly sorry that you don't. I wish you could. Maybe when you get a bit older.

Does that mean they have a right to treat "NTs" as inferior human beings?

After Action report: Gathering in Pioneer Courthouse Square

There was no large gathering here. There was a small group of six clustered in a tight circle along a wall with all their backs facing outwards. Everyone was holding flyers and ignoring everybody around them except those in the circle. After a bit, I managed to work up the guts to get close enough to ask one of them "Could I have a flyer". The person I asked immediately looked away and went into shutoff/ignore mode. Of course, this made perfect sense; I was ready for that and did not take offense, but it made me wonder how effectively they could distribute flyers that way. After a brief moment, one of the ones beside me said "sure" and handed one to me. Then it dawned on me: Of course, the person asked for the flyer will be overwhelmed and unable to function. Then one of the side people who is not looking at the asker can interact. Quite brilliant, really.

Overall, they would have been better served by having some kind of group-identifying sign. I only recognized them because of their website photos.

The flyer, covered in tightly-packed text, was 1/3 info about autistic pride day and 2/3 info about The ASAN PDX Social/Support Group.

I don't know what to think of this group yet. Overall, they seemed like very nice and ultra-shy people. I stayed in proximity for a full 45 minutes listening to their conversations until someone led off with "What's the difference between an Aspie and an Indian". Then I left. I think that was a mistake because I am now going to be forever wondering about the punchline.

Too bad Chicago didn't have a gathering, else I would have gone. I did get to meet some of the members of CASPAN a few weeks ago when the new wing of the Art Institute opened. That was fun, though I was quite nervous about meeting them.
