I was a month late. My father undoubtly had Aspergers, and he had brothers/sisters on the spectrum (pretty obviously), as was his mother. I think that is the most important feature in my being an Aspie. Apparently my mother's pregnancy was normal except for my overstay. I weighed over 10 pounds at birth. I was sick almost constantly as a child, but outgrew that. Aspergers was unknown at the time, so not being a classical Kanner Autistic, I was judged "just a little odd."

My daugher's birth was uneventful, and relatively rapid (six hours from the start of labor to delivery). Gestation wasn't great - I was sick, terribly sick for months. I threw up every 45 minutes round the clock, even water. I should probably have been hospitalized, but I didn't know enough to seek a second opinion when my doctor said "oh, every pregnancy is different, it'll pass." I went from 165lbs down to 130, then, eventually, up to 210 at the end. The kid was about 6 pounds. She's an Aspie if anyone is, although she seems better adjusted as an adult than I was at her age. Not sure if it's because I saw it coming and made allowances for her to develop at her own rate, or if it's that she is simply less severely impacted than I was at her age.

For comparison, my mother had other children. My sister, born a few years earlier than I was, was the product of a pregnancy riddled with threatened preeclampsia (sp?) and she's the NT in the family. She was also a few weeks early.

My mum smoked and drank alcohol for the first 3 months of her pregnancy with me because up until then, she didn't know she was pregnant because she wasn't supposed to be able to have children anyway. I'm not sure if that contributed to my AS or not.
Also, I'm not sure what it's called in medical terms but at about 4 months into the pregnancy the placenta started to die and it got worse as time went on. This means that I would have been deprived of some nutrients and/or oxygen. My mum went into labour at 36 weeks and I was in a frank breech position (bum first and feet up around my head) and apparently the cord was also wrapped around my neck so they had to do an emergency c-section.

To be honest, I'm surprised that I don't have more problems when I think about all of that.

That's interesting, because my mother also drank alcohol (way too much) during her pregnancy with me. I was born at the right time, but small because there were some areas in the placenta that didn't work, so I hadn't got food enough. And had the umbilical cord around my neck.
I was laid in an incubator during the first days.

My parents guessed that it might be because of the alcohol that I wasn't like most children. But AS wasn't known at that time.
I've heard that alcohol abuse during pregnancy doesn't cause AS though. So I don't know.

I was a G.I.F.T baby (I was conceived in a test tube (ironically fitting for an aspie  ) - an early form of IVF). Not sure about complications though.

I was born on time, but I was just under 5 lbs and "blue like a smurf" and "huffing and puffing like a little steam engine" (my mom's words). In 1974, all they could do was stick me in an incubator and pray. When I finally got normal color, I was unable to keep food down, and they couldn't figure out why (severe acid reflux, it turns out) so I nearly starved to death. Then I showed classic symptoms of autism, such as not speaking, but the Bettelheim Theory was in vogue, and my mom is really sweet, so the doctors had no clue what was wrong. By the way, my mom is a Mormon, and followed that religion's strict dietary laws (known as Word of Wisdom) to the T during her pregnancy. The placenta was flat and the umbilical cord was deficient. My mom's dad was likely aspie, his wife likely bipolar, and my dad has bipolar and paranoid schizophrenia. I am in favor of some forms of eugenics for obvious reasons-IMO my parents never should have had a child, their genes were too weak. My mom miscarried in 1977, then used birth control on doctor's orders, as she would have been unlikely to survive another term pregnancy.

With the exception of my Aspergers (bit obvious that) I had no complications at birth whatsoever. I was just over pounds and was born right on time (the exact day I was supposed to have been born). I was born at 1.38pm (bit of random info there) :)

There were the typical risks of my mother being 40 when I was born in 1967, so they were worried about Downs Syndrome. I was partially breech, though, and had to be turned, so I suppose it wasn't a particularly easy birth. My mom said the doctor turned me by palpating outside the womb. She said he just sort of kneaded her belly and got me into position. I'd never heard of anyone doing that before. When my own daughter was breech and she suggested it to my OBGYN, she said he looked horrified and told her we were going with a C-Section, so maybe it wasn't such a good idea.

Regards,

Patricia

My birth was met with complications. My mother knew something was wrong---the contractions were so slight that she and my father went to the hospital. It was discovered that I was tangled up/lying on my cord. I was in oxygen deprivation for somewhere around 45 minutes (the time it took for my parents to get to the hospital and for her to be prepped for surgery). An emergency C-section was ordered, and I was born.

I think I was about three months early and weighed in at 4lbs 12oz. I came out face down with my umbilical cord around my neck. There was something about my mother needing 19 stitches after the delivery.

From what my mother told me, my time from conception till birth was ok (despite the fact that mom went into labor in the middle of the night - talk about a wake-up call). The problem came right after. Apparently I had some sort of fluid pocket in one of my lungs. When I took my first breath... POW! my lung popped. I was in intensive for about a week. Later in life i developed AS and asthma, could be related but then again, it may not be.

Off topic: I swear with God as my witness, if my iTunes player doesn't keep skipping and throwing off my groove, I'm going to throw my brand new laptop against the wall. F*** Vista and it's compatibility issues!

I was born on my due date with no complications. My first son was born on his due date with no complications. See, even then we took things literally
