How about people being in fits of laughter over something you've said in a serious way, ever get that? People think I'm being funny on purpose but I was actually trying to make a serious point or observation.

I get this a lot. I will say something, and people start laughing, not as if they're trying to be nasty and laugh at me, but as if they genuinely think I was making a joke. I cannot, try as I might, see what was remotely funny about what I said. This actually happened on the phone the other day at work. There was one member of the public who was considering making a complaint, but had asked if he could see a member of staff in person to discuss it rather than write in (which he's perfectly entitled to do) so I was trying to arrange a date and time that he could visit us. I called the office where he would be going to, and started to explain to them what we needed, starting, "We've been contacted by a service user [standard term] who might be wanting to make a complaint..." Before I could go on, the woman I was speaking to burst out laughing, saying, "I'm sorry - that just sounded so funny!" I was so confused that I simply went silent, and after a minute, she apologized. I have gone over and over this in my mind, and I cannot see what was funny about the perfectly ordinary statement I made. If we had not been at work, I would have wondered if I was speaking to someone who was drunk. :?:
