I take Rispidal for my agitations. It works well, but the only side effect I have is weight gain. Makes you eat more, but the amount of weight you gain depends on your metabolism (gained about twenty pounds for me.) So yeah--useful but with some side effects.

my son took risperdal for 6 years with out any noticeable side effects, it is supposed to cause nerve damage if used for long periods of time. It was the best thing that ever happened for my son, it really helped control his meltdowns, he rarely has them now and he's off of the drug. he only takes celexa now. He was on paxil also at the time of the risperdal. it did stablize his moods too. I think you should weigh the pros and cons, If you want to control moods and meltdowns I'd try it for a while, the damage with this drug is from longterm use. My son is only on 1 drug now, he used the antipsychotic to help him through some very rough years, now all he treats is the anxiety.

From personal experience, I would have to say that it would be advisable to try non antipsychotic medication first (different ones at least) because I, and quite a lot of people (not everyone) suffered severe side effects even on a low dose. I won't tell you what the side effects are in case you do go on the drug (and start believing you have every side effect like I do sometimes!) but all I can say is it wasn't nice and wasn't all physical. Whatever you try though good luck with it.

I was on Risperdal low dose for 2 1/2 months in 2007 (exactly two years ago tomorrow that I started) for terrible meltdowns due to lots of stress. It helped the first two weeks, but then somehow stopped working, and I did have some side effects and some things I'm not sure of whether they were side effects but that scared me anyway. IMO it was at the time the least of two evils, but in reality what brought on the meltdo)wn-provoking stress was really a mission impossible with or without meds (move into independent living in a new city and starting college in the same month)...I had my major crisis-ending-in-psychiatric-hospital a month after I'd gone off of it, but none of my doctors since then have suggested I go back on it...I guess if I'd been in a healthcare system like the US I would be back on it if only just to sedate me too much to meltdown, because it's far more cost-effective.
