I'm from Texas, but you wouldn't know. I lived in Seattle for 4 months, and nobody said anything; probably because they think Texas = southern drawl. In many cases, yes, but not me. I can imitate a lot of accents, though.

I've been terrible at identifying accents throughout life, unless they are very extreme.

My wife from the mid-west constantly bothers me about at the way I say things, then a local radio personality she likes ended up saying most of the words the same way I do, so I assumed this was leaning towards us both living in the same state our entire lives.

Try this quiz:

My results: "You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent."
my results were a bit off. said i had a midland accent, but i'm from the pacific northwest. i guess there's not much difference then because everyone i know talks like me in terms or word sounds that would make up the accent.

i should have come up with a western result but i guess that one applies more to the southwestern areas like california for example

The accent test pegged me. It said Northeast. I grew up in New York as a child, but have lived in California for ages, so the harshness has bleached out. But apparently not the basics.

Would you mind posting your answers to the quiz? I fiddled around to try to figure out what choices would get "Northeast" (since I'm surprised I didn't get that), but I wasn't able to figure out, so I'm not sure what the difference is between my accent and the "Northeast" one.

These are mine:

#3-6: different
#7: dawn
#8: all three sound the same (I thought this one might be the difference, but all three options still produced "Midland")
#9: I went back and forth between the first 2 options, since I might say it either way
#10-11: different
#12 yes
#13 no

I'm from western Pennsylvania originally, and I have shreds of that accent. I've more recently been told I have a Canadian accent, but I suspect it's because I listen to a lot of Canadian music and am familiar with the way they talk up there.

By the way, what is it about the Pacific Northwest? It seems like it's the autistic capital of the country or something, judging by the sheer number of people from WP who live up that way.

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North
You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."
Result Breakdown:
100% The Inland North
80% The Midland
76% The Northeast
73% Philadelphia
65% The South
33% The West
19% Boston
15% North Central
Quiz Created on GoTo Quiz

I'm from Southern Missouri.

Which in all honesty is hilarious because people have often called me a damned yankee in our area :P I've never called soda "pop" however.

#3-6: same
#7: both
#8: same
#9: whore
#10-11: different
#12: yes
#13: no

i went to school with a kid who spoke with a robotic American accent he acquired from watching cartoons. I think environmental factors have a lot to do with it.

I'm from the north of England though I probably speak more Southern than anything.

A couple times I've been asked if I'm from overseas; probably the lack of emotional inflection.

I got predominately Northeast on that test (The Inland North and Philadelphia were nearly maxed out, the others were around 1/3 or lower). Even though I have your typical Australian accent due to being born and living here my whole life and all. I'm guessing people with the aforementioned US accent would be able to understand me well enough.

I sound "very Canadian" according to everyone I know. I never gave it much thought until recently when I realised that I have to pronounce things the way that they are spelt, hence the strong Rs.

Maybe it's a case of the Aspie accent in non Aspie-Americans  I don't have any figures available for AS diagnoses in the early colonies, but I'm sure if I was willing to devote a few years to the task, and bought enough old diaries...

I am South African and I sound South African. I can fake an American accent to some extent (Americans say I sound like I am from Boston, or like a foreigner who has lived in the USA for about 20 years), and I can fake some other accents. I sound German when I speak German (until I get further into the conversation and make grammatical mistakes or lack certain vocabulary); I sound pretty good when I speak Xhosa, but I am White, so I am obviously not Xhosa. Many Aspies are good at accents.

I got north central on that test which is pretty close to where I live. I see there was a more specific one for Milwaukee-Chicago area but my parents are both from northern Wisconsin. I don't really think I have an accent though and all those words do sound the same!

Sometimes I notice myself picking up accents from TV and the like tho.
