i have mild to moderate prosopagnosia.
i remember people mostly by how they move and behave.
i also remember their height and hair color, and i have a vague idea of their face.
i mostly know who i am talking to (if they are important to me) because i am situationally aware.
but if i meet a person in passing and i have no idea to form a personal memory of their characteristics, and if they look generic (which most people do) then i will fail to recognize them again.
i think a persons style of movement and the timbre of their voice is what i recognize most about people.
last year a group of people came out from hong kong to have a meeting with us (the company which i work for and i had to be at the meeting).
there were 4 hong kong people in the board room and i got introduced to them.
there names were gibberish to me. like "hang kwo" and "chung kok" etc.
i could not remember their names, and moreover, they looked identical to me.
so i (flimsily) learned the surnames of the people from hong kong and ascribed them to where they were sitting at the board table.
then, after an hour of talks, the refreshments arrived and everyone got up and went to the "treat cart".
they got their bagels and croissants etc, but their identities were totally jumbled in my mind once they left their seats at the board table.
my boss "judy" said for me to tell mr "hong"(?) about a routine i wrote to deal with rapid decay "specials" spikes, and i was not able to identify who he was and judy got angry and we all sat down again after the break and they all sat in different seats and i was annoyed because i had no idea who any of them were again.
i knew what to say, but what head i should aim it at was a complete mystery and i i failed to impress them or my boss.
