could be a case of projection, i.e. she's so dissatisfied with herself and her own life that she goes after other people because she can't handle looking inward and trying to change what she doesn't like about herself.

I would never go live iwth someone I only knew online, and it's a stupid suggestion that your Mom would make. I know Moms whooverprotect their children online with all sorts of horror stories about rapists etc., but this swings it all the way to the other end.

Actually, the weird part is she usually is on the overprotective side...for instance she tells me it is inappropriate for a woman to be a 'roommate' with a man.

Interesting. I feel annoyed often when she asks those annoying questions and she complains about the answers. To the point that i'll rather take public transport to places during summer rather than deal with my mother's annoying things (At thw worse)

EDIT: no havent had that problem.

Actually I think is a "coded-message":

a) I'm worried because you are still at home.
b) I'm worried because you spend too much time online ("get a RL")

so, with inverse-psycology language she said:

"Go live with him". That is a mixed up of "Why don't you want to live on your own" and "I'm worried because you spend so much time with him".

She doesn't mean to be direct. Actually I hate inverse-psycology, never worked with me.

The person in question was actually a woman. Mom would NEVER suggest I go live with a guy. In fact when I told her that the person I was talking to LIVED with her boyfriend, that was the end of that discussion. ;)

It sounded a nasty and calculated thing to say with no respect for what level of friendship you might have had with your online friend. I never had anyone say that to me when I was absorbed in online friendship, but that's probably only because it was a hobby I kept to myself.

Well at the time the only computer we had online was mom's. And that computer was in the 'office' of the house. So often mom would walk in to see what I was doing. Back then she'd get upset if I was looking up anything related to Transformers. She thought that was a waste of time.
