Hmmm.. Well, it's a (mostly) supportive place, with lots of really nice people. I kinda wish real life socializing was as pleasant as it is on here. Browse around, and make yourself at home.

I was momentarily confused by the 'picking people up' question too!! I scored 97 which is a little higher than I was expecting as I've been making a bit more of an effort to be social lately!!

I always figured the SA comes from years of being the 'weird' one, after a lifetime of awkward social interaction, once you realise the inviting-looking water is in fact frigidly cold, you could be forgiven for not being all that keen on diving in and developing a bit of an aversion to water!!

"looks at topics on the board, the name of the site... is very confused by the question. ",... God, you're demeaning.

I'm 29, m, and I didn't need a test to find out that I was severely,... "whatever". I wouldn't label it. I've never talked to anyone, outside of my own family, that is. When I do have to go in public, I avoid eye contact. Eww, gives me the chills just to think about it. Because of my isolation, I think I'm more narcissistic than I would rather be.

no, no, no. I did not mean that as demeaning in any way. I meant it as in, I wasn't sure if you actually meant to be on the site or stumbled across it during a search or something of that nature, and it kind of threw me off.

A lot of people stumble across different sites/forums via searches through google and such without realizing what type of forum they are actually talking on.

I am sorry if I offended. :? It was just an attempt to be silly when I was unsure as to how to respond or exactly what your question entailed.

I scored 115. But I knew that was going to happen, I'm VERY anxious in social situations. I always have been. Anyway, to answer Alba's question, no I would not have less anxiety speaking about my special interest in front of a group. I never talk about my special interests because other people don't care, although I do sometimes get carried away and can't help talking about it it's never in front of a group.

I was in doubt in a couple (~1/5) of questions, so I just clicked some in those. (i.e. 23. Giving a party)
I thought i was going to score higher.

"Would you have less anxiety speaking in front of a group, if it was concerning your special interest? ".

Answer: Almost zero anxiety in that situation.

The problem with SAD is that to address it you have to address irrational thoughts. But what if those thoughts are not irrational. People don't like others who aren't interested in them, only talk about what is of self interest and behave oddly. So fearing bad things happening in social situations is not irrational if you have an ASD.

I took the test before I read this thread, so I forget what my actual score was, but it was in the nineties. I'll have to agree about a lot of what people said. It's difficult to label something as a 'phobia' when you have a very logical reason for having an aversion to it. Phobias come from one or two bad experiences, not dozens a week for years on end.

Then again, I'm twenty years old and the concept of friendship is still a mystery. The only friend I've ever had is currently my girlfriend, so I'm not sure that's a solid basis for what 'friendship' should be. :?

Your Score: 85

What the score means:
Social anxiety disorder has been divided into subtypes:
a generalized subtype, in which the individual experiences significant anxiety in most social situations
a subtype that applies to various specific phobias such as public speaking, eating in public, or urinating in a public facility or when others are waiting.

Score 0-30 SAD unlikely
If performance in a particular situation, such as public speaking is impaired, could still meet criteria for a diagnosis.

Score 30-60 SAD probable
Scores in this range are typical of persons entering treatment for the non-generalized type of SAD.

Score 60-90 SAD very probable
Scores in this range are typical of persons entering treatment for the generalized type of SAD.

Score 90 or higher SAD extremely probable
Scores in this range often are accompanied by great distress and difficulty in social functioning, and are also commonly seen in persons entering treatment for the generalized type of SAD.

Good to see i'm not the only one lol

I figured it meant dates or offering people rides when you see them walking.

I thought that I might have SAD at one point after reading an article about it in a magazine, but I really don't think my social anxiety problems are severe enough to actually be considered a "disorder." I'm shy, I don't like talking on the phone or talking to people I don't know well, but I can at least leave my house. I usually don't even really think about the fact that I'm probably going to get anxious until I am actually in a social situation, and even then, most of my anxiety comes from the fact that I just don't know what to do or what to say.

I thought that I had SAD until I read about AS on a SAD forum. At first I was in denial (for a couple years) about the fact that I could possibly have AS, but the more I read about it, the more I realized that any social anxiety symptoms I have are probably better explained by AS, and I do have a lot of "idiosyncrasies" that have nothing to do with an anxiety disorder.
