Straightedge is just a hardcore fad that will be over once you reach your 20's. In the 1980's it was serious but it's just a joke now.

Everyone I knew who was straightedge in high school broke edge once they got to college. Most are alcoholics, lol.

I went through it too. Started drinking when I was 19/20 and boy did I ever drink. I occasionally have a few drinks on the weekend now but I don't go crazy.
Even my most committed straightedge friends have broken it. Funny thing is they can't handle their alcohol. Drunk after 1 or 2 beers.

I don't mean to troll this thread. I respect people for not drinking or taking drugs, but why attach a label to it?

I agree with this. I don't claim to be blade-edge because I have kitchenware but don't own automatic weapons.

I don't understand.

You don't want to drink, smoke or take drugs to self-medicate; most people your age aren't taking these things to self-medicate..., rather it's a social thingy, in-addition to the usual wanting to be like an adult, so I'll do adult things. Don't like it, don't do it. Anti-depressants and other psycho/psychic drugs help for clinical depression and anxiety disorders to a better extent than the former recreational drugs, which is why you're prescribed them by a medical doctor.

The best medication for the pain of high school is to stop going; not all of us are made to fit into the social schooling box.

I don't see it as a label, I see it as a philosophy, kinda like how people are Republicans or Democrats.

I would even go as far to say it is the same thing as to call yourself Christian but Straightedge isn't a religion.

And I see it as a teenage punk/hardcore fad.
Just don't get anti-alcohol and in everyone's face like you're superior than them.
That's probably one of the reasons why I hate straight edge.

Yep.

From about 1999-2003 I was really into AFI and, of course, a lot of my friends who were into them ran around with big black X's on their hands and would talk about how straight-edge they were. It seemed like more of an identity thing than a philosophy to them. There was a lot of "Look, I'm straight-edge, just like Davey Havok!"

I'm not saying you're one of those people, I just think that you shouldn't let some passing "philosophical movement" (which, by the way, was denounced by Ian Mackaye, the agreed-upon founder of the "movement") make you question the ingestion of a medication which could possibly help you.

I have to add that I find it funny that originally, when people spoke about being straight-edge, they included sex in the list of vices which were not condoned. As time went on, somehow people just tended to leave that one out when they claimed to be straight-edge.

You may be right there. How does the saying go? A hypocrite by any other name...
(Hey, what can I say? I went to a private christian school from k-12.)
