I hate getting new clothes. Going to a mall is my own personal hell... Breaking in new, stiff clothing is also a thing I loathe. If I do have to buy something new, I prefer to go to a thrift store or just make the clothes myself. It is hard to find things that are comfortable and acceptable. The shirt I am wearing now is 14 years old. Heh heh heh. You should see my poor kitty slippers. They are worn out and full of holes and they are the best slippers ever. My husband always teases my by threatening to 'fix' my kitties. I know he won't... he just teases. Most of my stuff is full of holes or faded... The signs of nice, comfy apparel.

I enjoy thrift shopping...it is one of my favorite pastimes...I despise retail stores for clothes.

I like charity shops, but I don't buy clothes from them. I collect VHS tapes which are available for about 50p a throw. I have over a thousand tapes (including twelve different copies of Ghostbusters).

I think the issue your husband has is that he probably thinks you are dressing like a bag lady. I have the same issues w/my wife sometimes (I'm NT, she's AS). She has her set cloths that she likes and she'll wear those day in and day out unless I say something. Stained, old gray sweatpants, ripped & stained T Shirts. You don't even want me to get into her bras. : ) She dresses nice for work but man o man look out weekends. : ) And she's a very beautiful woman too, so it's such a shame to not let that shine through once in a while.

Here's the way I look at it. Everyone has certain cloths they feel comfortable in. Especially around the house. I get that. And I don't think most men have an unrealistic expectation that their wife or girl friend is going to be all dolled up all of the time. There are more important things in life. I love my wife for what she is inside, not the beauty on the outside, which will fade. But still, as shallow as it is, men (and women) like their partners to "clean up" a bit once in a while, because it makes them feel special. You often hear this coming from NT women about their AS husbands too, so it isn't just a guy thing.

Hey, it's not that big of a deal in the overall scheme of things. But if you're partner is telling you something bothers him you should listen & maybe try & meet him halfway. JMO anyway. Cheers.

Charity begins in the thrift shop topic

I hate spending money, so this is where I go to have at least a few pairs of pants. Most of my life I have worn what others do not want, and I only buy socks and undie pants brand new. I have pairs of socks over 20 years old--clean and repaired. I repair all my undie wear, too!!

I hate shopping, clothes shopping in particular. The flourescent lights are too bright and whoever makes decisions about a store usually decides to play annoying music over the intercom/loudspeakers. Then the music is interrupted about every three seconds by someone squawking "(random name of employee) to checkout 7, please, (name) to checkout 7, thank you." Or something along those lines. Really, they don't have to yell.

And it takes forever to find clothes in a color I like, that aren't cut strangely, are mostly cotton, and don't have seams that will bug me to death.

My patience in a store lasts about 10 minutes.

OK. Umm... Why? 12 different copies of Ghostbusters???! ! :o In different languages, or are they all exactly the same?
Wouldn't that take up an enormous amount of space? Plus the picture quality will just keep degrading over time.
I've got a pretty big DVD collection, and even that is starting to take up too much space...

I love the film and when I love something I tend to get duplicate copies in case the unthinkable happens (I have nine VIC 20s that I keep in my kitchen cupboards!). I have the original rental version (1985), the general release version (1987), the limited release GB1&2 double cassette (1990) and the GB special edition (1999). I also have budget release duplicates of these videos (except the rental version).

I am running out of space for my videos, though. I shall probably get rid of the ones I bought on impulse and never actually watch.

Why VIC 20's instead of Commodore 64's or Commodore PET's or Amiga's...?
Or maybe one of each?

The VIC is the one I'm most passionate about. Also, I have a C64, which I hardly use, and three Amiga 600s and an Amiga 1200. The PET is a bit out of my price range and probably a bit too retro for my taste.

Are you interested in Commodore then?

No, not particularly. I was just wondering why anyone would need more than 1 (or none since they're ancient).

How much do they cost these days anyways?
Do ancient computers go up in value just like ancient baseball cards?

It would have been fun to have a Commodore when I was a kid, but my first computer was a 386 SX 16MHz when I started high school.

I don't mind shopping and happening to come across clothes that I like, but yeah, deliberately replacing a coat seems like a huge undertaking, almost as bad as a haircut.

I usually don't set out to buy a new coat; I buy one if I like it and gradually wear it more than the others. Over time, it becomes my normal coat.

I enjoy new clothes when I'm the one picking things out. My mother likes to get me novelty t-shirts for Xmas. That's cool, but one year she got a few that were a bunch of negative slogans like "Life is crap" with a picture of a bird pooping on a guy's head. I never wore it, and never will. Life can suck sometimes, but I'm not about to adopt such a negative slogan. Another one was, "I used to care...but I take a pill for that now." I don't condone the use of psych meds, nor do I take any, so that's another shirt I'll never wear.

Grandparents used to buy me horrible clothes like sweaters with designs on them that reflect nothing about my personality or what I like. Those days are over, though. I just tell them "give me money".

Aside from clothes I've received a lot of pointless and ridiculous items. One was a watch with Santa Claus on the face. I wasn't even a kid. I was in my 20s. Grandparents...

No real attachment to old clothes, but I don't put much stress on things, so most of my clothes are old. When I need replacements I just buy whatever is available. I remember shopping for slacks with a GF. Bought four pair at the first store. Done! She had allocated the entire afternoon for shopping. We went to other stores just to demonstrate to her that men have very few choices in clothing, prices didn't vary much, and there just wasn't any reason to shop around.

Underwear: "Oh, Look! They have TWO packages of medium briefs, I'll buy them both." End of shopping trip.

If you're careful, you can find a fully-working VIC for about £20 -- generally they go for about £50/£60 on eBay, but the price range is vast (I once bought a VIC as untested for £8 (it works perfectly!) and I also paid £160 for a VIC with a ton of extra gear). The C64 I got for £5.50 plus postage (the C64 was a lot more popular so it's a lot more common). The Amiga generally goes for £25/£30, but you can get them for cheaper.

When you bear in mind that some people spend thousands of pounds a year on cigarettes, it soon puts my inexpensive little hobby into perspective.
