I don't believe that vaccines are the main cause of autism.I believe that if a person has a genetic predisposition to autism, the large number of vaccines that are given to our chlidren when their central nervous systems are still developing, may add to the severity of the condition.

My 4 year old son has not had the MMR shot, so I cannot blame the shot for his autism. But what I can say, is that the day after he got his 4 month old shots, he started shaking his head from side to side as if he was saying "no" I thought he was having a seizure, but the doctor said that she thought it was just something he learned how to do. He still does it 3.5 years later!!

I just keep going back to the fact that when Kanner first put a label on autism, it was a rare condition. Now I meet someone almost everywhere I go that has it, or knows of someone that has it. What is the common denominator??

I know that awareness is a big part of it. (both academic knowledge and personal experience as a spectrum adult) Although, I've also heard that there is a larger number of severely disabled autistic people seen where there was far fewer before. Have you heard anything in this regard?

Dark Red Beloved-

I am not sure that I have heard of more severe autistics being more severely affected by the vaccines. One thing I did read was what they are calling "regressive autism" . This is where the parents are reporting that their child was developing normally on track, had words and social interaction and then after they had the MMR started to regress.

I agree that more awareness of autism is a factor in the increase in number, but I just don't see how it can be the only factor.

For instance, my husband's brother seems very Aspie to me, and my husband shows some tendencies. However, they are in their late 40's early 50's and were not given near the amount of vaccines that my son (who now is Asperger/PDD) was given when he was an infant, and his case is more severe.

I don't know if this controversy will ever end, but I don't think the government in the US would ever admit it, if they knew there was a problem!

I meant have you heard of a higher number of diagnoses of severely disabled autistic people? As opposed to more autism spectrum disorder diagnoses in general. Still...you're right. I don't think awareness can be the only factor either. What I have seen is that after becoming familiar with how the field of psychology is structured, I am re-reminded yet again how highly subjective it is. How that relates to the physical chemical properties in vaccines and the human body, I'm less sure-- but it would be interesting to see the history and development of the medicines, then compare that to US history and psychology...
