Funny thing with spiders: I have never been afraid of them, though all other (girls) I've met are.
So also there I am different.
It was always me (or my dad) who had to kill them when my sisters were terrified of them.
I always thought, why be afraid, they do no harm.

One jumped out of a closet onto my mother and bit her. Wasn't poisonous, but it's a mental image I'm stuck with.

I'm not afraid on tarantulas, but I'm a little uneasy holding them because I was once told they were very fragile and if you happen to drop it, it'll most likely die....that's what I was told at least. I've held all sorts of creatures, snakes, rats, iguanas...but for some reason the tarantula seems so "breakable".

I have ferrets. :D I guess they would be my exotic pet.

I love tarantulas! Out of all the spiders they fascinate me the most........I would love to touch their little furry bodies just to know what it feels like.......can you tell me? :?:

As far as I know, here in Oz you have to have a special permit for tarantulas as some species are not native to Australia and they do require special care but we do have breeders here. One must not confuse some species of tarantulas with funnel web spiders(which are tarantulas but not the pick up kind) which are horrendously venomous  And if anyone was to keep them as pets, well huge kudos to you!

I often pick up huntsman spiders(depending on their size) which can have a nasty bite but are basically harmless to adults. Huntsmen are an imperative part of our ecosystems....... especially insect control. I feel myself incredibly fortuitous if we have a huntsman in the house. My son and partner do not share my entusiasm :)

Thanks for sharing that story......it really brightened up my day. And kudos to you for propagating a very interesting and wonderful species of spider.....

my H. lividum is a birdeater from se asia(there are alot of birdeaters!) but is not the Goliath which is definitely NOT endangered as you can buy one online quite easily(and pretty cheap too!) as they are captive bred and have been for some time, you can even find them in pet stores once in a while. If you check out you tube there are literally thousands of vids starring tarantulas and you can see the wide variety out there...not very many known species are not in the hobby and breeders are trying every day to get the more rare ones!

Well, Micchta, I don't hold them so I don't know what they feel like(It is tempting to feel the texture ,believe me!) they are fragile for sure and the old world ones will not hesitate to bite and the new world ones have urticating hairs that they flick off when bothered and cause severe ithcing or rashes....I have HEARD that they can range from fery soft and velvety to rough and bristly!

Thank you!! I did not realise they were so fragile........I have also heard (and this saddens me deeply) that some owners "defang" their tarantulas......is that true? My sincere apologies if there is a reason for this to aid the spider, not the owner. I am a little ignorant when it comes to breeding and housing tarantulas.

Thanks for sharing about how they feel.......it must be hard not to touch them.......and amazing about the "urticating hairs", what a wonderful defence mechanism! (what does urticating mean by the way :?: )

hhhhmmmm fascinating!

I love tarantulas! I only really have two now, a G. Pulchripes and L. Parahybana(who is a major hair-kicker), but i've been wanting to get more. I'd love to get an H. Lividum... I know they're evil little meanies, but they're just so pretty and bluuuuuuue. A T. Blondi would be pretty cool to have aswell... Just the fact that they're the largest spider is enough to make them interesting. They're so easy to take care of too, so getting more doesn't seem like a big deal.. My parents don't want me getting any more now, though. My biggest animal interest is snakes and lizards, and i've just convinced them to maybe let me get a couple more snakes.

Eww... spiders. I've always hated them, but the night before we went on holiday in 2001 there was this MASSIVE spider on my wall. Trauma ensues.

Oddly enough, I hate spiders but love snakes. Slithery, slimy snakes ;)

I like spiders. I think they are so cute, but then I think snakes are cute too. I could never understand why people are so afraid of them when the spiders, sharks and snakes seem so vunarable and unable to protect themselves. I never squish spiders when see them running around in the house. I just scoop them up in my hands (they feel so neat) and put them back outside. I once got bit by a jumping spider but it didn't know any better and was probably afraid I was going to hurt it. I usualy know the species but if I don't, I scoup them up in a cup or box to put them back outside. I was eventualy able to get it outside. Spiders are more afraid of us than we are of them. Spiders are my friends.
