Apparently, Martin Luther said back in medieval times that autistics (or at least, people assume by the description he gave that he was talking about autistics) don't have souls, and there's still some that believe it. Might be Jehova's Witnesses - not sure, exactly.

Me: A mild form of Autism.
Other: Isn't that like Rain Man?

Y'know what's funny?

Apparently Dustin Hoffman did study an Autistic kid for a few weeks to prepare for the role, to get a lot of the mannerisms down.

I give him credit for that.

Unfortunately...first of all this was the 1980s when most folks really didn't understand much about Autistic people still.

Second of all, even though he got a lot of the traits...he somehow managed to over-generalize/exaggerate them, and in the process, screw it up considerably.

This resulting inaccurate performance....I believe won him an Academy Award.

Just worth noting...this was also the same numbnuts who inspired a certain 3rd -rate dictator to "pick up the pieces" of the collapsed Weimarch Republic, and out an entire ethnicity in the process, and blame them for the troubles of his country.

Perhaps you've heard of the guy.

Yeah, Martin Luther was utterly insane; what's creepy about him is that he not only said to question reason at every turn, but to never challenge faith.

He and Hitler...butt buddies....

Yes. The person was spewing some BS about "seeing the soul in a person's eyes" and what not. She was really wacky mix of New Ager and Pentecostal Christan and had a deep prejudice against things scientific and technical. She might have been a little Schizophrenic.

The old superstitions about "changelings" seem to describe autistic people. What's sad is that the language used by the anti-vaccine nuts today is disturbingly similar.

Is that why you wear Depends?

What difference does it make? We all have problems.

Silly people.

There was a Babysitters Club book with an autistic girl who did that.

Kristy and the Secret of Susan.

Susan was a savant unfortunately. She was severely autistic and had the calendar thing in her head and could hear the song only once and recite it and play the piano without learning the music. She could sing and say what day something happened on or what day someone was born on.

But thank god in the other book Inside Out, the autistic kid wasn't a savant but he was severely autistic but he built things out of blocks and stuff. At least Ann M Martin knows not all autistic kids were the same. She's worked with them before.
