You can't win!

I'm pretty new to WP, and stuff like this scares me. That's all I'd need for my shaky self-esteem, would be to inadvertently screw up and be rejected by an ASD forum full of people who by definition inadvertently screw up and get rejected by NT society. Kind of like Hermie and Rudolph being misfits on the Island of Misfit Toys.

If I do anything wrong on WP, it's not on purpose. To my knowledge, I have not done anything wrong, but I have learned from bitter experience IRL that most of the time that fact means nothing. Please, everyone, be gentle with me?

Don't worry about it. Just be yourself. No matter who you are and where you are, someone will always fid something to complain about. It's not worth worrying about and it's not your problem, it's theirs.

That's the same thing my therapist keeps telling me! :) "There will always be somebody mad at you somewhere, and not everything is your fault." Easy to understand yet hard to internalize for this compulsive people pleaser. (BTW, people pleaser + AS = ongoing disaster :P)

Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words, J0sh! :)

Personally I don't see a problem with bumping up topics from, say, the 2nd page. 3rd page is pushing it, and I personally wouldn't bump anything from the 4th page unless I feel like I missed out on a really good topic. 5th page and older = don't even think about it.

I'd laugh if this thread ends up dorment for weeks and someone bumps it. Ultimate irony.

Exactly.

I'm new, all of this is new to me. I'm not shy and I'll be active in replies and posts; but I'm no mind reader. If I see an interesting topic I want to reply to I'll reply. Honestly I don't have the presence of mind to think "gee, is this topic too old to reply to? I wonder if answering this persons question might aggravate other posters who have been members longer...Oh wait - I can't ask this now because it's not the current topic of the week" etc etc.

However, I don't "bump" posts either. I won't write "bump" as a reply just to get it to the top of the subject list. That's completely lame.

PS- I love that scene in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (land of Misfit Toys, lol)

I do not mind thread bumps at all but I think this is a pretty good guideline:

1. Does the thread you want to bump involve issues that are no longer relevant (i.e. Someone's topic from a few years ago about a personal or particular situation)? If so, refrain from posting in it.

2. Does the thread have a lot of information and seems to be asked a lot? (i.e. "What is stimming?, "What is ____?", "Do you *insert common symptom here*?" Bump the thread with the most discussion if you have something of value to add, do not create a new thread.

3. Do you think an old topic in particular would be of value or help and have something important to add? Bump it.

My new obsession is to wait five years and bump this thread.

I think this thread has given people the idea of bumping into old threads
I've seen one about beautiful aspies and that was like way back in 2007 i think.... at least on the brightside, it gives other new people and visitors a chance to actually read and then write about it.... :)

That's what I thought, no matter what you do it's WRONG and that's that.

But of course! This is WRONG Planet, after all. By definition everything you do here is wrong. :)

That's true. Doing anything prompts a response of.

YOU

ARE

WRONG

But that's not always a bad thing.

I usually find it appropriate to only bump up threads from the last week, month max.

Sometimes if a thread REALLY grabs me or I'm on a slow forum, I can make exceptions.

Is it just me or has this place been crazy lately? First old threads get bumped from 2004/2005 and then from 2008 and now some threads from two months ago and last month are being bumped. I don't have a problem with threads that are a couple months old or a few months. It's great seeing them come back to life. Now I hope the one about me offending my aunt won't get bumped because that's over with and done with.

Only time I don't think it's right to bump a thread that is a month old or a couple months or a few months is if the OP hasn't even returned to the forum since then so no point in replying giving that person advice or sharing your story with them. Even if the OP still comes to the board, sometimes that issue is over with and has been dealt with and is done.

If the OP is still participating on the site isn't something I even considered when I replied to any post. I replied to some old posts when I was typing in questions in the search option. Sometimes the topic hit home and I had to say something. If the thought has never crossed my mind, then it's probable that it not have been considered by the person/persons bumping old threads. Is there some kind of active list of the 37k+ members I am not aware of that everyone should be consulting to decide if we should reply to any aged topic?

The person who bumped threads from 2004/2005, it's possible he wasn't necro trolling and he was just using the search function and those threads popped up and he didn't realize how old they were. I've done that before at another forum and lost my posting privileges for 24 hours. But they were just random threads and they didn't discuss any issues or concerns They were questions like Do you think ADHD is made up, What mental illnesses do you have, What crazy things do you do, etc and they were not even two years old or even a year old and I think those threads are reasonable to bump. But they have pretty silly rules there, you can't reply to threads that are over a week old but yet there are gray areas they have and I have difficulty seeing them so I don't do it. It's safer that way.

A few that come to mind are threads concerning "Rain Man", so-called "self-diagnosed" Aspies, whether people would want to change their diagnosis (or lack of), and Autism Speaks's misintentions.

Yeah I always thought it makes more sense to bring up an old topic if it's the same one you want to discuss.

I've been on lots of forums that get really annoyed with people who make duplicate threads.

Never knew a forum that got annoyed with bringing back old ones. :?

Before I saw this thread, I created a thread in the WrongPlanet.net discussion forum asking for guidance on this topic. I saw a post or two by people who were annoyed about responding to old threads. One of the moderators (makuranososhi) pointed out the potential problems, but also said that he saw no problem with it except for certain situations.
