Oh I see. I will thank the teachers for teaching me Pluto in the past then.

You're right, times have changed and we need to learn new realities. :)

Some special interests can hide very well in normal society. My asperger's brother has always been absolutely obsessed with football. Growing up in Liverpool, this seemed fairly normal.

I've wondered about this myself.. I have lots of interests but none that I really talk about is that weird? I am also 33 and female.

I love apple macs, gaming consoles old and new, old school BMX's and restoring them, modelling, art & design, learning about various things that interest me, and reading online forums.

I love World of Warcraft and computer games generally, which is odd for a girl, but I live with and get on best with lads!! !! I like these things not because I'm Aspie or otherwise, i just enjoy them.

Obsessions are wide-ranging and differ in intensity between obsessions and people. When I was a kid I was really into car gearsticks. I used to insist on sitting in the back smack bang in the middle of the seat just so I could see the them as we drove. This then progressed to car washes and I wouldn't let my mother have the car washed without me. but I couldn't name every single type of gearstick or car wash. I was just drawn to those objects.

Other obsessions I had as a kid were tridents, Streetfighter II, Burger King hats, ABBA (the biggest one) and weirdly enough, the horns on the beat in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. No idea where that one came from.

The constants in my life are music (espeically singing - I'm afraid I'm rather conceited and love the sound of my own voice) and tigers, especially that Tony one from Frosted Flakes - he's grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!! !

I have no special interests. Insofar as special interest means 'obsession'.

Not all Aspies have obsessions, and most people with obsessions aren't Aspies. For example, my Liverpoll FC obsessed brother.

hi- im so sorry you feel so out of it. i feel like that too- though i KNOW a.s is a spectrum disorder, i generally feel as different from other a.s people as i do from n.ts.
but obsessions are just one facet of it- and i have gone for several years without really having one, anyway.

also- though its perception based on truth, its not the whole story- NOT all a.s people are on the science/maths side of things- a lot of us are arts based- art, music, design etc and somedont fall into either camp; its all just stereotypes. im crap at maths and science too (numerically dyslexic, in fact, which in itsself is quite a.s).

but you can have a job, which is way more than i can manage, other people have relationships, which i also cant do either- we are all different- hence spectrum disorder. and i dont think everyone 'has to' have a specialinterest to be a.s; its just a common, but not defining, feature of a.s.....

but why do you say people make fun of your physical appearance?

what is the problem? being sensative about other people's opions is just as a.s as being oblivious to other people- its just less recognised. there are loads of threads on wp about being OVER emotional, over seansative- its just another sterotype that we are all unemotional and unnoticing... im not. things hurt...

I think this is an important point. Apparently, a lot of female aspies in particular have special interests that can "hide" better. Mine is music and no one seems to think it's that strange.

There was a time in my life that I didn't have any special interests. September 2004, until December 2005. It was a nightmare.

I suppose you could say that Aeronautics is my special interest, since I'm always talking about Aircraft design... unless I'm talking about Terraforming, or Genetic engineering, or...

Sometimes a special interest can be difficult to describe. Almost everyone is interested in having fun. Maybe they just need to find a less perverted way to do it.
