I'm a girl (although.. grown up now, I guess) and I like action movies. I went through a good few years where I absolutely loved them. Now I have to be in the mood - there are other genres I also love too. If I am feeling robust they're fantastic I love them, whereas if I am feeling sensitive I find them dull and loud and prefer to watch something with more detail. Hope I'm not sounding too boring, here.
I agree that the 80's and 90's were the time and I must say that although I don't follow plots very well or remember names of characters (at all, in a lot of movies; thank you to the member who talked about face blindness although curiously I don't suffer as much from that in real life) I still can appreciate them a lot.
Actually (showing my age somewhat) I have an 8 year old and he and I just finished watching Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull. We also had a ball watching Transformers 2 which I thought was a lot better than the first Transformers movie. We saw it in the cinema and it was one of the best films I had seen in a very long time.

I love action movies, not the over the top violent ones, but more like The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, that sort of thing, if there is a good plot to go with the action then I like it...

Love action films, extremely. But as far as the amount of dialogue, it would almost suck without it. They say what makes a good film is the way the dialogue is used--Not just the script itself but the ratio between vocal and physical events and how it is presented.
As for Terminator Salvation, McG should have kept his mouth shut. When speaking of how the film is to be all about balls to the wall action, he said something along the lines of: "This new Terminator movie is not for pansies." That happens too much these days.

Ditto. There has to be action in a movie for me to like it; but without a story, the action is boring. I'm not so much worried about special effects as about strategy. If the hero's strategy is, "walk in and shoot them until they fall down," then I will yawn my way through the movie, no matter how many millions were spent on sfx.

I appreciate some action movies, but there needs to be a strong plot and reasoning. The violence and fight scenes are only interesting in the way they relate to the plot and the character development, it's not inherently intriguing.
Hence I can really like war movies, or something like Battlestar Galactica (which isn't very action-focussed, admittedly), but I'm not very excited about something like District 9. (One of the worst movies I've ever seen... The second half consisted entirely of an extended firefight)

Car chases, gunfights, mid-air combat and stuff randomly exploding do not hold my attention. Some good hand-to-hand combat, swordfighting, basically all pre-firearms combat will entertain me if done right.

I love espionage! Bourne identity, etc. If they are intelligent, like Enemy of the State which is one of my favorite of all time (plus Gene Hackman whom I love) then the action is cool. I loved Alias for the time it was on. Hate Bond movies though, that is just a frat boy's version. I can't stand Arnold or Bruce Willis though so if they are in it I won't watch it.

I love the action! One of the cleverest action movies I saw recently is RocknRolla with Gerard Butler and directed by Guy Ritchie. The plot is very good. Jason Bourne, I like it... James Bond, not so much but is ok. John McClane, absolutely great...
I also like Last Action Hero which is somehow a parody of action movies...
If you like action movies with no plot then the upcoming The Expendables is the right thing for you...
