Im not a cheapskate at all. Im a big impulse buyer but if its something expensive I do alot of research. I always spend alot of money on entertainment. Going to the movies, buying new computer games, clothes has been me new obsession.

I won't repeat my post on a similar recent thread. This thread, however, asks how I avoid wasting money. I avoid monthly expenses, or at least keep them within reason. Instead of cable television, I watch broadcast. I watch almost exclusively Public Broadcasting anyway. These days YouTube and similar services lets me watch exactly what I want, when I want.

Instead of an expensive data plan for smartphones, I have the least expensive, basic plan for voice calls available. For web access away from home, I use free wifi hotspots instead. I still use my old trusty PDA and Netbook, which don't require a data plan. I do also have an inexpensive internet subscription: (dial-up! maybe I am cheap!) I plan to upgrade soon to DSL now that the cost for that has come down.

One man's cheap is another man's frugal. If I were rich, I wouldn't be so careful with expenses but I agree with sinsboldly. I also enjoy the challenge of finding the best value, especially if it is less expensive.

My wife and I live within our means.
I research items in consumer reports before we buy ;whether a bed or washing machine.
I'll spend twice as much to double the distance.

I do buy 'toys' for myself but never to the point of debt .

Depends. I probably have thousends of pounds worth of gadgets... I got my iPhone 3GS for £440 and my MacBook for £700 both out of my own money.

But when it comes to spending money on other things, like birthday presents for other people, I turn into a massive cheapskate.

That's not because I don't care, or because I'm selfish, but because I plan out what I'm going to do with my money, and having to spend it on something else suddently screws the system up.

To put it simply, I can't afford as much as I'd like to.

And I'm not about to be one of those idiots who uses credit cards as if they were cash growing from trees. I don't think I could handle being in debt like I've seen most people.

Aside from that, I never buy something unless I know it's quality. It's ridiculous to see how much people waste their money on stuff that doesn't last long or even work.

What good is spending money if you're perfectly happy with what you already have?

I don't buy much, because I was raised to be mindfull of how much I spend and what I spend it on. I also don't need much material property to be happy.

Spending makes me feel good. Sometimes I'll do it just because I'm sad or upset. And I love to see my collections grow. I'm especially happy when I see any one of my collections complete.

Very sensible. I too can't afford all that I'd like to, so I'm a cheapskate I guess. Actually my tastes are fairly frugal, apart from travelling and nice food my interests are rather inexpensive (reading, drawing, some websites) - and even as for my more expensive interests, I can cook so the food thing isn't that bad (and some dishes I like like salmorejo are inexpensive to prepare), and I can stay in hostels, etc.

In my case I don't think it's so much AS-related as due to my background: my parents, while not cheapskates, have always been careful to spend mainly on very durable things (a nice house instead of a fancy car, for instance) and avoid debt as much as possible.

I think it depends on my mood. It seems like when Im sad or upset I buy a lot more things that I do not need but when I am in a good mood I only buy what I need and always shop around for the lowest price

Being a cheapskate or not has nothing to do with having a nuerological disorder.

I am very loose with my purse strings, I love to buy things for the people I love.

This is quite a topical question for me.

My best friend knows I am AS and regularly mentions that he thinks he is.

We sometimes go out and spend a little more than we need to.

One of his (few friends) is a full on NT who seems incapable of going out alone and is one of the worst cheapskates I have EVER met.

But that's just 3 guys out of 6 Billion

I'm pretty frugal, as I would rather wait for something to go on sale than to pay full price.

Same here. My mother has always looked for bargains when shopping and from a young age, taught me the difference between something I want and something I need. I was never the kid to throw tantrums at stores because I couldn't have something. Now that I have my own money I'm very good at saving and only spend what I need to. I don't buy things on impulse. If I want something I ask myself if it's really that important and if it is, then I do my research on the stores that sell that item for the cheapest amount of money.
I've been called frugal many times but I don't mind. I wont be the one complaining that I don't have any money left.
