It's sympathy vs empathy for me. I can love someone allot. I can feel good or bad for them based on information I know... That's sympathy, I think. Empathy is actually personally feeling the same emotion as the other person based on non-verbal information. Empathy requires a level of connectability and the ability to catch invisible non-verbal mind/eye/face/body bullets that I just don't pickup naturally. I can't make myself feel something I don't feel, but that doesn't mean I'm cold or unloving.
