I had an aid with me from 6th grade and up. Then in 11th grade I started to be on my own in classes because they wanted me to learn and be on my own. I only had her when there be other special ed kids in that class and she was there to help all of us.

It was a good thing I had one because I get disruptive and display "inappropriate behavior" and I required more attention than other students and the teachers had no time for that.

I don't even understand why you would want a "buddy".

If you're being picked on or think you are, having a buddy is a good idea because that person will protect you. Kids leave you alone then if your buddy is a grown up.

I think it's a great idea.

Reminds me of those support groups like AA. There was a lot I gained from some of the people I got to know but you have to be willing to put yourself out there and take in some of the honesty. I know most of don't like to be told how people really feel about ourselves.

One thing i DO KNOW from 47 years of living on the planet.

Familiarisation of "difference" leads to understanding.
When people who are from different worlds or different cultures or different neurologies start to get together in a spirit of enquiry and shared willingness and openness, the fear and misunderstandings can and do start to break down.

I THINK YOUR IDEA IS TRULY BEAUTIFUL, INSPIRING AND VERY WISE!! !! !! !!
