I'm above average intelligence but not gifted. I haven't taken an official IQ test but I don't need to because aIready know how clever I am. Not all of us are a bunch of Jimmy Neutrons though, I know aspies that were in the bottom classes at school.

I like this analogy :)

why would anybody want to reduce the myriads of different human mental powers to a single number

In my case, when I actually did join Mensa, I just wanted to belong to something and I wanted to belong to something that DIDN'T depend on being popular, or even being passively liked or tolerated.

That's the reason why I LOVED exams at school, they were the sole source of my sense of self worth and value; other than swimming and running, which did NOT require me to be 'popular' or even tolerated in order to WIN.

My brains and long distance running may very well be the reason that my parents didn't have to bury their own son :!:

1. We tend to be more analytical
2. We tend to be less social, so more time to dig up facts related to our obsessions...

I think it boils down to bell curves. We, as mentally-ill individuals (I mean that endearingly), deviate from the mean, the average. It's only natural that we often have deviant IQ's to match our deviant cognition and behavior.

This describes me perfectly. The good-on-some but suck-on-others part. That's the way I was in high school too- it was either A's or D's. I even failed a few classes.

BLATANT NARCISSISM WARNING

I have almost no source of pride or self-esteem, so when I took an IQ test as part of my diagnostic process, I was excited and pretty confident I'd get a good score- at least over 125, hopefully 135-150. I ended up with a 118 overall, which was kind of disappointing. Kind of. Most of the rest of the scores were within one standard deviation of this. There were, however, a couple interesting points.

My "social IQ"- I can't believe that's a real term- was 66. As anyone who knows a little pop psychology can tell you, anything below a score of 70 means you're ret*d. Thus I am, quite literally, "socially ret*d". [Hey, isn't that the definition of Asperger's Syndrome?] Anyway, my "vocabulary" and "writing" IQ's- I can't remember the correct terms- are 148 and 152, respectively. One would not believe the ego boost this provides to someone who prides themselves on their intellect.

So, to recap: social IQ is 66, and language IQ is 152... essentially I can call you an as*hole in seven different ways off the top of my head.

It really is frustrating, though, to have such a comparatively low general IQ. I'm the prototypical windbag, able to eloquently deliver nonsense in a manner not seen since... um I can't think up a good metaphor right now.

I can rhyme like nobody's business, though.

Thanks :)

And in spite of my view of IQ testing as a cloak for fascism, I don't blame you for joining MENSA. If society insists on conferring low status on some individuals, it's not really surprising that they leave for a group that gives them some kind of recognition.

Hello Mike,

I enjoy reading your posts and the one above really struck a cord with me.

I don't find you in the slightest bit dim.

I passed the Mensa test, by JUST 1 point; I scored 149 which actually makes me one of the 'thickos' in Mensa :!:

I have NO contact with Mensa, other than paying my annual subscription and receiving a new member card each year.

There are all kinds of people here and the only measuring stick I use here is how much I like their posts.

You are one of the people I really enjoy seeing on the Forums.

Another one is Pensieve, who has a job interview on Thursday and I want to send some more encouragement and best wishes for that.

There are quite a few others that I really enjoy seeing on here but I don't want to turn this into an episode of American Idol. :)

There are probably 4 things that really get my attention in people;

Kindness
Honesty
Humor
Intellect (unless they are real a**h***s)

and there area PLENTY of 'intellectuals' that score VERY low marks in the first 3

Pensieve: You go get 'em on Thursday, there's a lot of people here cheering for you :D

I had an IQ test at nine and it came back 74.something.

Thankyou.

I was actually going to post in here saying I'm not smart and damn proud of that. But really I know why my IQ was just average: My very basic math ability, the anxiety/stress (ugh boyfriends) I was going through at the time and I wasn't even wearing glasses. I hope one day I can be re-tested (probably when I go in for an ADD evaluation, which also may contribute to my low testing score) but it is just a number and if it's high enough you can puff out your chest when you tell people.

What I don't get is... why!? It's not only on Wrong Planet, this french asperger forum got the majority of it's menbers in the "gifted" range: http://www.aspergeraide.com/phpBB2/
How come? Maybe that asperger are "smarter" in general, but in this case it go way beyond waht we should expect statistically. So why aspergers going on aspies forum are (generally...) so smart?

There are several reasons.

People with AS really are, on average, smarter than the general population simply because of the way Asperger's is defined (no one with below-average intelligence can be diagnosed with AS, but plenty of people with above-average intelligence are).

There is probably a selection bias on any threads discussing IQ- someone with an IQ of 105 is less likely to be interested in discussing it than someone with an IQ of 130.

People may be lying about their IQ, or they may be basing their claims off of online IQ tests, which tend to give absurdly high numbers.

Combine all three of these factors, and others which I probably overlooked, and you will off course find that the average self-reported intelligence among Aspies on this forum is significantly higher than the average for the general population. I personally doubt whether traditional IQ tests are valid or in any way meaningful, but that is a topic for another thread.

i'm sure you are more than smart enough, mate. intelligence is a gift that some receive less-of, some loads more-of. that said, much is expected of those in the latter category. if one uses their intelligence for negative ends [hurting people, self-agrandisement at the expense of others] they would just be making negative karma for themselves, and in the process would be acting very stupidly. ironic, isn't it? i would like to think that the lion's share of folks "here" understand this.
cheers:+)

hello, i must say you impress me. a big noodle [brains] and big niceness are as rare as hens' teeth, from what i've seen so far. as far as MENSA goes, i am thinking of what groucho marx said about not wanting to join any club that wouldn't have him;+)

but seriously, if i had the big brain and could join MENSA, could you tell me that i would find mainly kind and generous people therein? [IOW, i wonder why you don't hang-out with them?] if so, when i meet my maker [hopefully soon] i will petition for the next lifetime as a genius so i can join.

it is so hard to find kind people where i live [out in the sticks with a collection of atavistic, paranoid survivalists with guns and a nasty attitude]. i value kindness above intelligence, btw.
