We've got a local supermarket chain here called Ukrops. They're a little bit pricier than Food Lion or Wal-Mart, but the food is a bit better quality and fresher, the service is much faster, and the stores are spotless clean. There's a smaller, neighborhood store less than a mile from my house. It's busy during the day, but in the evenings after 8PM, it's pretty much deserted. I go over there then and do my shopping because it's so quiet. The store has traditional acoustical dropped ceiling tile. I can usually walk right up to a regiester and check out without any wait. The clerks are friendly, and I know many of them by name because I'm a regular, and it's great to chat a little while they are ringing my groceries up.
I got so sick of Wal-Mart grocery shopping. That place is an Aspie's worst nightmare. There's so much noise in there with screaming kids. beeping and buzzing electronics, PA systems squawking announcements, and the acoustics of the open ceiling transmit and reverberate the stuff all over the building. Worst of all, there's long lines, rude clerks, and sticky, messy floors all over the place. The parking lot is another story...with rude people cutting you off all the time. It's definitely not worth the few dollars savings to deal with this literal headache!
