From what I can tell, a typical "emo" is a whiney wannabe goth kid who thinks it's all about wearing black, liking Tim Burton movies, and writing crappy poetry without "getting" the whole inner sadness thing that is so key to being a goth. Instead, they have an external rage and insist on not controlling or surpressing their emotions at all, even as they persistantly drink and smoke like nuts (most of them are underage). However, come to think of it, most self-proclaimed goths are this way as well.... >.<

Emo technically is a type of music, but people started to name themselves after it for some reason. This then spawned Screamo, AKA the white person's rap. It's not like rap at all except that it lacks the fundamentals of music and is therefore extremely annoying. (Screamo involves a guy screaming into a microphone at the top of his lungs, so loud you can't understand what he's supposed to be "singing," while some other guys wail on guitars and drums. For further explaination, see the sadly-popular band Atreyu.)

Thanks for the commentary, Verasae. I enjoyed it immensely. And I concur.

People seem to go out of their way to become a common stereotype.
Or maybe most people are common and as a result stereotyped.
I dunno.

It goes both way. People seem to feel more comfortable when they are acknoledged as a stereotype, but they don't want to admit it

I can think of one thing that's an advantage to me with that has come from this emo trend. Becaue of my small size, I have always bought women's jeans that are boyishly styled. Most of the time, nobody can tell the difference, and they think I'm just wearing men's jeans.

The problem was that I always felt odd going into the women's section, picking up jeans, trying them on, and buying them. Women's size 5's are loose on me, size 3's are a bit closer fit. ...both of these are much smaller than the smallest men's size offered of waist 28, inseam 30, which are extremely rare at most stores. Even then, the smaller men's sizes are usually just the larger sizes with a little fabric taken out the waist, so they are still like wearing a tent on me, even though they may stay on my waistline. I'm not into the saggy baggy look that's been the style for so long, especially since I sometimes need to look a bit professional for work.

The Emo trend is for guys to wear extremely tight women's low-rise jeans. So, with all these emo kids browsing through the girls jeans, I don't look so out of place doing the same thing!! ! Many of the women's jeans are also now being sold with unisex sizing. Instead of using the archaic number sizes, they go by legitimate measurements like the men's jeans do.

found a perfict song for the moment being:
Dear Diary

Mood: Apathetic

My life is spiraling downward. I couldn’t get enough money to go to the Blood Red Romance and Suffocate Me Dry concert. It sucks cause they play some of my favorite songs like “Stab my heart because I love you” and “Rip apart my soul” and of course “Stabby rip stab stab” And It doesn’t help that I couldn’t get my hair to do that flippy thing either…like that guy from that band can do….some days you know...

I’m an emo kid, non-conforming as can be
You’d be non-conforming too if you look just like me
I have paint on my nails and makeup on my face
I’m almost emo enough to start shaving my legs
Cause I feel real deep when dressing in drag
I call it freedom of expression, most just call me a fag
Our dudes look like chicks and chicks look like dykes
Cause emo is one step below transvestite

Stop my breathing and slit my throat
I must be emo

I don’t jump around when I go to shows
I must be emo

I’m dark and sensitive with low self esteem
The way I dress makes everyday feel like Halloween
I have no real problems but I like to make believe
I stole my sister’s mascara now I’m grounded for a week
Sulking and writing poetry are my hobbies
I can’t get through a hawthorne heights album without sobbing
Girls keep breaking up with me, it’s never any fun
They say they already have a p****, they don’t need another one

Stop my breathing and slit my throat
I must be emo

I don’t jump around when I go to shows
I must be emo

Dye in my hair and polish on my toes
I must be emo

I play guitar and write suicide notes
I must be emo

my life is just a black abyss... ya know..it’s so dark. And it’s suffocating me, grabbing a hold of me and tightening its grip, tighter than a pair of my little sisters jeans...which look great on me by the way.

When I get depressed I cut my wrist in every direction
Hearing songs about getting dumped gives me an erection
I write in a live journal and wear thick rimmed glasses
I tell my friends I bleed black and cry during classes
I’m just a bad, cheap imitation of goth
You can read me “Catcher in the Rye” and watch me jack off
I wear skin tight clothes while hating my life
If I said that I like girls I’d only be half right

I look like I’m dead and dress like a homo
I must be emo

Screw xbox I play old school Nintendo
I must be emo

I like to whine and hate my parentals
I must be emo

Me and my friends all look like clones
I must be emo

My parents don’t get me ya know. They think I’m gay just because they saw me kiss a guy…well, a couple guys …but still, I mean it’s the 2000’s, can’t two…or 4 dudes make out with each other without being gay. I mean, chicks dig that kinda thing anyways. I don’t know diary, sometimes I think you are the only one that gets me…you’re my best friend.

I'm not surprised Laura posted the emo song, if she's not insulting someone, she's not happy. Get some hobbies.

Now, I don't quite fit the emo label. I am depressed and do write poetry, black is my favourite colour, but I don't like most emo music, don't self harm (I know that many emos dont, but such is the label/stereotype), don't wear anything tight, dont wear make-up (though with my face I should ), don't go around crying and don't try to be 'scene'. I dress like a grunger, like the music of a metalhead (though goth, rock, punk and grunge also tickle my fancy), and personality-wise I'm probably most like a goth, I have appreciation for darker literature, tend to be a thinker, enjoy contemplating and so forth (and also, it's my favourite clothing style, though I have no goth clothes/make-up myself). Not everyone fits a label, but if they do...

Who cares? Let them be who they are. Every site I go on, there's a thread insulting emos. Do so much as try to suggest they are human, and you get crucified. When people act depressed to fit in with a crowd, ok, that is worthy of derision, but if people like black, aren't Mr. or Mrs. Sunshine and like that kind of music, that is part of their nature, not some act to be 'cool' and should therefore be respected. I mean, you guys wouldn't like it if everyone suddenly started bashing on aspies for being different... (Ok, I'm waiting for the lame 'They're all the same though' joke which is without exception as funny as finding out you have cancer)

I find them sad in a very humorous way. You can't not make fun of them for trying so hard to be trendy, so much so they start acting emo. I also agree with what Nomaken said.

Ah yes, the ignorant assumption that is scattered throughout other sites rears its ugly head here too. Considering that all emos get is bashing from other people, it's hardly "trendy" to be emo. Hasn't it occured to anyone that perhaps people are like that, and not just trying to fit in to a little clique? I mean, God forbid somoene is true to themself. The first ever emo must have been trying to fit in with the rest of the emos, who didn't exist at that point in time...

Don't look at me! I sorta like the Emo trend. It looks MUCH MUCH better than the ghetto trend that has been popular for WAY too long!! !

not really, he's more of a hippie, or a metalhead. (That dude more resembles my appearance...hilarious picture!) Oddly enough, I've noticed most emo's have a serious hatred of these types for some odd reason.

Emo's usually dye their hair black, and while it's long, it ususally doesn't go beyond their ears. Frequently they spike it, and also sometimes have a portion of the bangs covering one eye. The thick, black framed glasses from the 40's and 50's are popular too, along with many other style clothes from that era, like sweaters, and deep-dyed blue jeans. Converse all-star's or some other types of shoes are also favored. Another popular thing is white belts.

Here's a link that more closely shows the "Emo" look

Another warning sign of your kid going Emo is the clunky black eyeglasses frames. Does he have them yet?

He's NOT emo. He's a Hippy, however with the Knife between his teeth, he has a decidedly white trash/Deathpunk, or stoner rock look about him.
