I don't mind at all, even if it's a doctor. I'm much happier with colloquial language than formal, as long as clarity isn't lost. It makes me feel that they're coming down to my level and talking with me human-to-human instead of hiding behind airs and graces or showing off their amazing extended vocabulary. I know a lot of big words myself so it's not a case of sour grapes. Casual clothes, casual language, that's me.

I wouldn't want to make anybody refer to me as a "person who has Aspergers' Syndrome." I had to help my wife with her college work once, and it seemed so clumsy to have to type that stupid phrase over and over, especially when there was a strict limit on the number of words required for the essays. I kept wanting to write "autist" but it wasn't worth the risk of losing marks.

Of course it's much easier to use a crisp word like "aspie" to poke fun at one, but that's a separate problem. The mere use of the word isn't an insult as such.

I wouldn't like it to go the same way as the "n" word either. It doesn't seem right that one group can use a word while others can't.

I'm only offended by the lowlife types who think Ass-Burgers and Ass-Pie are funny, but more by their Neanderthal belligerence than the words. Ignorant w*kers.

Of course, if you go with the correct pronunciation of Hans Asperger's name, Aspie would sound like Ozzpee. :P

To me 'Autie' sounds like you're referring to somebody's bellybutton - "Outie" - unless you're pronouncing it "Oddie" and that might be considered demeaning. :?

It interested me. How do you speak word Aspie? In other way than ah-spee? Or sth like speak without K, ah-spea? (I'm not sure how to write it, English phonetic is little strange ;) )

For me Autie was always connected with word out, what is quite good association.

It also occurred to me that Polish (like most languages) doesn't include anything exactly like the American English "a" as in "ass". Or as in "as" for that matter.

We speak Autie exactly like Auto (out-ee). We have a joke that Autism is discrimination because of not having Auto (car)

American English does not say "Auto" like "out - o" either. It's "awww toh". At least that still rhymes with Autism.

For me those terms are like "n****r" to a black person. It's okay if another autistic person calls me that but if an NT does so, it is very offfensive.

I don't know how I feel about the terms. Aspie is sometimes convenient in that it's pretty short and is a noun referring to a person rather than the phrase "that person who has Asperger's". I haven't felt a negative connotation from it, and wouldn't mind if someone used it to refer to me, as it seems friendly and functional. Autie, I think is not as easy to say, just on a physical level for me and I would probably not use it much, but maybe because I'm not used to it.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. The terms Asperger mind, Aspie mind, etc. were coming up as I was playing with a way to describe a mind with these characteristics that seemed positive to me. I don't know. I do know, that I think the Asperger/Autistic mind is very beautiful. See super power thread. :)
