That's exactly what my problem is I think. My short term memory. Is that an AS thing too?? Having bad short term memory?

I completely agree!

It reminds me of constant illuminations which is a Funeral For a Friend song.

Anyway, yes, short term memory is common with AS. Actually very very common.

If I'm calling a client or a store to check on an item, I usually forget at least half the stuff I planned to check on. And then I'm too embarrassed to call back. I prefer to just drop in and talk face to face, but if it's a minor question, usually people seem to think I'm a little odd for not just calling. Anyway, I mumble a lot and no one can understand me on the phone so it's easier to do it in person.

Related to that, I have a real hard time catching a phone number if someone reads it off to me. I always have to make them repeat and slow down. I thought everybody was just impatient and spoke too fast. From some of the previous posts, I assume this is a common issue with Aspies?

I have that, too. Just got a re-examination (to double check) less than a month ago. I completely relate to what pensieve described: hearing words but taking longer to understand what they mean. It sucks at my job.

Seriously, though, Penandinkmarie, if it's just short term memory, then all you should do is take notes and have the speaker repeat information you may have missed. It is good to practice enunciation (in case that's also a problem for you; it is for me) so the speaker knows what's being asked of him/her. Again, if it's only a short term memory problem, then (this is an idea I just thought of) you might want to keep a piece of paper with the type of info needed when writing down messages; like a message-taking form, if you will.

If it's any reassurance, I've been afraid of the phone ever since I was a teeny tiny kid, and I mostly use a phone at my job. I get nervous on my cell phone and I avoid answering my home phone if it's an unrecognized number. I rarely ever sound like I know what I'm doing, but I get on with it. I bet you can too.

Here's the wiki for Auditory Proscessing Disorder: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_p ... g_disorder

Sometimes I wonder if this is a symptom that follows ADD and Autism or perhaps is the fact that ADP causes Social anxiety a recipe for Autism?
