It's uncomfortable (especially using pencils) and sometimes I cringe when I can feel my thumb's pulse with my index finger.

My hand seizures up if I write for long periods of time and I know that I don't hold my pen properly. I had to take remedial handwriting classes in year 4 because my handwriting was so bad. I taught myself to print neatly when I was about 19, but my cursive script is just hideous. In fact I even have trouble signing my own name and making it look the way it does on my credit card because at times I just can't form the letters properly.

I put a "death grip" on a lot of things, and that produces fatigue and pain when I'm doing several things. You have to have the "right touch" to do penmanship for a long time.

I used to do that in my earliest classes. I would also press really hard against the paper with the pencil. Handwriting was my only bad grade. This was before computers entered the classroom.

Oddly, I became quite good at drawing.

i am dyspraxic so i have always found writing a bit of a task. whenever i have to write a letter by hand, i am always wary that my handwriting is too messy (like a 6 yr old's). however, when i have to take notes which is purely for my own use, i can write quickly but i'd need lots of paper - my handwriting is huge! yuk!

I'm Dyspraxic too and I find handwriting quite difficult. My writing speed is appalling, but luckily I get to use my laptop in lectures. :)

It has always been physically painful for me to write, after a very short amount of time. I very rarely write anymore, everything I'd normally have to write, I can do on the computer and print it out.

I don't write by hand anymore, except when I write small reminder notes to myself. Everything else, I type. Writing by hand hurts my hand, and it's rather tedious.

Oh yeah my hand cramps up if I do a lot of writing. Nowadays even a little bit of handwriting is painful.

Yes. But reading my handwriting is even worse. The only ones able to read it are pharmacists.

Sometimes. Occasionally (usually when I'm feeling especially tired or stressed) my fine motor skills are so poor that it's incredibly difficult to get my handwriting to look like much more than a bunch of scribbles, but other times it's very precise and controlled (enough so that, when I use print instead of cursive, I get regular comments on how bizarrely neat it is).

Typing is much easier though, either way.

It's pretty uncomfortable for me. Part of it is that I don't hold my pencil correctly...I hold it the way a kindergartner does, if that makes sense. I grip it really hard. I think I do that because I have hand tremors and it's hard to hold it the correct way. My mom (she's an OT) got me all sorts of ergonomically correct pencil grippers and huge pencils and things like that as a kid (still does now sometimes, lol) but I never found a great one. She tried really hard to get me to hold my pencil correctly and I just refused. I buy mechanical pencils that are the largest and heaviest I can find, and those bother me the least.

I've always wondered why I've always had such a dislike for handwriting. My hand always physically aches after handwriting anything for an extended amount of time. I don't even grip my pen or pencil properly. I'm still trying to put the pieces of my autism together. A lot of this is starting to make sense to me and I'm glad I'm not alone. I spent many years denying my autism.

Me too--though mostly pen and ink stuff (usually stippling), much less frequently with a pencil.
