Another chewing-hater - and whistling, slurping, tapping, pen-clicking ... they all cause me to to become tense and angry. I don't think there is a "reason", because I think this is hard-wired into some people - it runs in my family and in quite a few others that I know.

If you want to know more about hatred of chewing sounds, there is a talk by an audiologist about it here:

I hate babies crying or children whining about something. Pretty much any noise going on in the background if I'm talking/listening to someone...I don't like music playing or the TV going (it's ok if it's not too loud). As a kid I loved the noise of a vacuum, I fell asleep to it.

Sounds that make me almost instantly meltdown:
Loud chewing, slurping,swallowing

Utensils dragging against certain kinds of plates

Kids crying that aren't my own, and that I can't get away from

Screeching that occurs over intercoms, and the way they make voices sound

Alarms

Any loud noises that are all nearby, and never-ending, and occurring all at once.

There's lots more that I strongly dislike, but these are the ones that affect me the most.

I so agree with you. It makes me REALLY angry just thinking about them.

And thanks for the link, penguin-avatar guy. Really interesting.

I hate the sound of guitars and pianos. I can listen to them recorded just fine, but get them anywhere near me and the sound is just too sharp.

I hate the sound of most human conversations because they're usually incredibly idiotic.

Lol, agreed.

But seriously, I only have one sound that really aggravates me, and that is the sound of wood from a pencil that hasn't been sharpened well enough scratching against the paper. It's a horrible sound, and it sends chills down my spine.

You know when coats have that material that makes scratching on them sound like your DJing?

That could make me gouge my eyes out. It's so horrific.

A lot of noises scare me & make me panic. Motorcycles, alarm clocks or other similar sounds (car alarms, etc), trains, certain cars, fireworks, & a lot of other things.

People talking (several at once, or sometimes even a few), because it feels like someone is sticking needles in my ears.

Balloons popping, because it is OMGWTFOUCH. I hate all sounds with a loud attack, but balloons are my pet hate.

My brother was threatening to pop some tonight; and I was totally serious when I said I'd break his nose if he did.

I hate the sound of electric hand saws, because they sound like dentist drills.

car alarms, and any other beeping that begins out of nowhere .. the worst part of it, not knowing what it is or when it will stop.

never been bothered by anyone chewing or breathing, but i've been very self-conscious eating my cereal as i read so many people are .. what do you do, go in another room when people are eating?
