I didn't get where I am today without remembering that "The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin" was a very funny show.




This thread is weird. No one tries to smell other people's farts. Well, maybe some people do, but they'd know that's socially unacceptable, so they'd do it discreetly, I'm sure.

I suspect the sniffing was a sign of indignation that someone would allow their child to play with the rope thingies, continuously making rude noises. Or maybe not even that. Maybe it was just a nonverbal, "We've been waiting in this queue a long time, haven't we?"

Also, if the noise was happening several times, I think people would cotton on immediately that it was coming from the rope things, and that it wasn't someone actually farting. I mean really, who just stands in line at the post office (or wherever) and just farts over and over? If someone accidentally farts loudly in public, they are going to feel embarrassed, and spent the rest of their time making sure it doesn't happen again. I'm sure there are exceptions. Probably the same people who go around smelling other people's farts.

People in my imagination do quite often, for it makes me giggle and forget to obsess over the shifting webs of nonverbal messages I think people are always unconsciously sending each other.

For the record, there is a particular type of sniff when someone is trying to detect a fart: a longer, more sensual one than the typical quick and dismissive sniff of an offended or indignant person. I did a lot of farting in my wild younger days and became keenly sensitive to these things.

I think it's just NTs copying everybody else and doing what everybody else does.

I think if I developed a knock out gas for the army I would put in the gas bomb an audio device that would make random farting noises to trick the victims of the gas attack to sneak a sniff so I could get them with the knock out gas.
