I think if someone says this, you should immediately ask them, "Do you even know what Asperger's is?" and/or "Have you ever heard of Asperger's before this conversation?"

I'd be more likely to be a smart-ass and say, "Yeah. You're right. After all, you ARE the expert, aren't you?"

Your approach is so much more diplomatic.

I think we are expected to look like a stereotyped "mentally ret*d" person. (I hate the R word, but sometimes theres no way around it)

I may be getting a little off topic, but I really hate it when people make a big deal about using the word "ret*d". Its a valid word. If someone is mentally ret*d, it describes them exactly such that there is no ambiguity. I think the politically correct movement needs to be flushed down the toilet.

One time, on another forum, I said that I had a ret*d chicken. Then one lady starts flaming me saying that I was being offensive to her ret*d daughter. Of course, nobody had a clue that this girl was ret*d until the mother said that.

that was about the response i got from the one friend i disclosed to (after he said he might have it) because i'm nothing like the one ten year old boy he'd met with it. he also kept calling it a mental disorder and said "therapist" means "the rapist."

bad move on my part, ignorance and fear on his part.

i hope i've done him a favor (sparked interest in the topic?). otherwise that conversation was a big mistake.

All so very true. Doubtful most have a clue how hard we try.

On another level, if I should ever encounter any individual who has any sort-of disorder/condition, I could never imagine being harshly judgmental; the contrary! I do not know how anyone can justify their being so critical of what they do not know. If they don't know, which is fine, then best they not comment. Amazing people can have so little compassion. Indeed, they can be conniving and callous.
