I have not got to name many pets, normally other family members name them.

But I did name one cat and I have taught my wife's dog to answer to a few extra names.

none of our cats had names, they were [one after the other] just called "hey, cat!" or "ntchntchntchntchntch," that tongue-sucking sound you make when calling your cat- i've never heard anybody make that particular noise when calling their dog, just their cats, and i wonder why.

I always name pets because I like words. If I need to name a dog it will be Puccini and a cat will be Mimeaux.

It's because dogs will usually respond to any old noise, but cats need a rather interesting one before they'll pay attention. I do use that noise for my dog if he doesn't respond to his name at first.

When I was a kid we had pets. We had a dog and a cat, who had names, but I would often just call them 'Dog' and 'Cat'. I would talk to them and address them as 'Dog' and 'Cat'. I dunno why - I guess because they were a dog and a cat, and I'm a human, and I'm sure they saw me as 'Human' in their mind, rather than with a name.

I've named (or used existing names given by past owners) for all dogs & cats, but not other smaller pets (or some wild animals that we've taken in after injury or something, made it so they couldn't be in the wild anymore)... Almost all of our pets are rescues, and therefore, many came with existing names. Right now, we have two cats named Smokey, and at another time we had two pets named "Tigger", a cat and a chihuahua mix. That can be confusing, especially in the records at the vet! For those whom I have named myself, I use what I think are clever names that aren't necessarily human names. Usually I'll use an ethnically suitable name; for instance I'll pick a German name for a shepherd or rottweiler, or a British name for a boxer or a spaniel, and Spanish for a chihuahua.

I gave my pets practical names. When I was a kid, there was a stub-tailed cat that I named "Boy Cat" and his long tailed sister was "Long Tail"

I've had one dog and several fish. My dog had a name of course, a real person name. I don't think I ever cared about naming any fish.

Come to think of it....I'm not sure I come to my name. Really. "Lab Pet" really IS my name - an estabished nickname. But as to my given name; not sure. I do like my given name (it's nice) but I really don't think of myself as that name. Or any name for that matter.

One cannot know but I'd imagine animals don't know their names either, really. Pet (and people) names are fun though.

I tend to name them the first thing that pops in my head such as Pippin or Hugo.

Granted, she wasn't a pet, but If it was up to me to name my kid sister, I probably wouldn't have given her a name. For the first year of her life, I'd just call her 'baby'.

My 5 year old doesn't name his teddies. He's Autistic. I know it's not a live animal but still. He has a Teddy that he just calls Teddy, and he has a BIG 3 foot tall teddy that he calls Big Teddy, and He has one that I knitted that he can to take outside to play and that one is called Outside Teddy. Does this relate at all to the topic? Just thought it was interesting that he doesn't name his teddies.

I used to name my plushies after inamimate objects such as Chair or Couch. I think it lasted such a long time because my mum made such a fuss out of it.

When I was a little kid, I tried to name all our pets "Kitty," including the dog. I was overruled.

Now that I'm an adult, my pets have names but I still call them kitty most of the time--including the dog.

My mum was thinking about getting another rabbit and being the Sailor Moon fan I am, I announded I wanted to name it "Usagi". When my mum asked what it meant, she said that's like naming it "Rabbit". If I ever have kids, I'm going to name them forien words for child or person.
