Yep, phone calls = avoid like the plaugue. I never answer our house phone if I can help it, and very few people have my mobile number.
Worst I think is having to call up places like getting a doctor's appointment; even though with them I can usually figure out beforehand roughly what I'm going to have to say, the second I'm actually in a call with someone I get all nervous and the words somehow get lost somewhere between brain and mouth. I also have a bit of a processing delay with speech, especially if there's background noise, so I must seem to whoever is on the other end to be half deaf and slow. Then I feel silly and it just makes me worse and I tend to speak too fast in the rush to get it over with.

Phone calls usually give me a hard time.

I don´t know when I´m expected to speak so there´s a lot of awkward silences/both trying to talk at the same time.

They usually work better if they are with someone I know well or someone who phones my house very oftenly.

I hate the telephone with a passion that defies description. Well, actually, some of the sentiments expressed here mirror my own, so maybe it is readily describable.

Yuck. I hate the phone. My answering machine is always on and I never pick it up unless it's someone I want to talk to. I "forget" to take my mobile phone with me, too.

I know some people who are like that too so I thought it just had something to do with being shy.

I have a kind of phone phobia, I don't answer when I don't know who it is and used to avoid phone call even from my friends when I was younger. I hate having to call someone because I have no real idea of how to start the conversation or what to do if I got the wrong number.

My mobile phone isn't even on vibrate, I hate this thing so I basically never know when someone is calling me. I prefer text messages. Just like the way I talk to youn on this forum is nowhere near the way I talk in real life.

When I got my phone line installed, I made sure my number was made ex-directory, which means it's signed up to the Telephone Preference Service. If any company phones me trying to sell me something (and they haven't been authorised to, through me buying something through them, and forgetting to tick the no marketing calls box) then I can say that I'm registered with the TPS, that they are breaking the law by phoning my number, and that if they call again they will be reported to the Information Commisioner's Office.

Either that or click the link in my bookmarks for Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' video, and put the phone next to the speakers (especially if the call being recorded for training purposes was mentioned).

Thanks to this I can be 95% sure anyone phoning me is someone in my family, or that bloody wierdo who keeps asking for Tony XD

Cell stays on vibrate - even that's annoying when its buzzing across the dresser.

My land line had several different ring choices, one is a nice muted sound, like phones in a doctor's office, though if I'm not in the room, I don't hear it.

In any case, I never answer the phone. That's what answering machines and voice mail are for. Until I know who's on the other end, I'm not touching it. Then I'll decide if I feel like talking to them right now, or if I'll call them back later...or not.

I'm the same way. Phones are incredibly rude. I don't like random interruptions from whatever I'm doing. I also don't like the fact that I have no time to prepare myself. I like my own personal private space to be a place to be free from annoying interruptions and prying people.

The worst is when you're busy masturbating, just about to climax, and some telemarketer calls. Even if you don't answer the startle factor from the sudden ring tone is enough to kill all pleasure.

Interesting thread.
I've also always hated talking on the phone and avoid it as much as possible, screen all calls; in addition I also can only "hear" with the left ear when on the phone.
I never realized it could be related to the AS.

I don't much so mind picking up the phone because I know it's not for me. Ever. At the most it will be relatives that will chat with me a bit but really want one of my parents. I can manage that. But when I have to do the calling, I almost can't even if they are people we know well. I've only recently been able to call the doctor's office. Fortunately my two doctors share a secretary :D

...we need call display.

Edit: I'm right-eared.

I went to just cell phone to try and avoid the random telemarketing calls. I hate even checking voicemail. My friends and family know to text because then I can think through what to say. Otherwise I say "what?" 2.5 times per minute just to stall while I'm trying to process. And I talk over people constantly.

I won't answer the phone unless I know the number. And it comes up on my contact list.

Probably another aspie trait. I have phone phobia. Interestingly, when I was in PTU at the hospital, they helped me overcome my fear of phones by gradually increasing my use and responses on the phone. I luaghed it off, but incredibly it actually seemed to work. ever since then, I at least am able to answer the phone and deal with conversations.
