Someone actually has looked into our likelihood of getting osteoporosis, at least in an indirect way. Kids on GF/CF diets, which are often used as a fake cure for autism, tend to get bone density loss. That scares me because I was on GF/CF as a kid, and am shorter now than I ought to be by how tall my family members are; so I take a calcium supplement and include a good amount of milk in my diet, hoping to catch up. I recently discovered that since the age of 17, when I left home, I've grown two inches. I didn't know that was possible; I thought your growth plates closed long before that, but I guess my body was holding out for when it actually had some more bone-building material to work with.

If you also have enough autoimmune you have decreased risk of cancer.

If you only have autism you have a lesser chance of being addicted to smoking,

little bit on topic, little bit off topic, but whatev.

Anyone else on the spectrum have a metabolism that literally keeps weight gain/weight loss at a balance? I can eat and eat, including stuff that would be fattening and not gain a think, and I can miss meals like crazy and not lose anything. Both of these I think in my case is due to my Metabolism adjusting itself. Granted I can still lose/gain wait from very intense workouts OR extremely prolonged periods of inactivity (it takes me at least 3 months of inactivity to even gain much of anything :/ )

and all those who keep on saying reduced chance of smoking/drugs, Correlation does not equal causation. From what I have witnessed (IRL and in various forums) I consider our rate to be about the same as those who aren't on the spectrum.

I drank milk all the time as a kid but I no longer drink milk and I'm GF. I take a calcium supplement though, I hope that is enough... :?

If you eat enough green vegetables and fruits, I believe you will have sufficient calcium.

But the GF/CF diet isn't autism; it's something inflicted on autistics. I'd like to know how it is for autistics who aren't on such a diet.

As for growing late, that's normal. Or at least you're in good company.

I grew 1 cm in my 40's! But I was eating tons of squid at the time....

I look young, and normal weight if not relying on food emotionally for support. Otherwise I have very good health, as I exercise and eat very well.

The stress involved in not fitting in, and being bullied, has overall caused me health issues.

Exactly ! And "vegetal calcium" is actually healthier.

I am lactose intolerant, no need for calcium supplement.

moog is correct. diets high in animal proteins and processed crap and low in vegs and fruits will have deficiencies. too much animal based protein can actually interfere with calcium absorption. if there are unhealthy vegans, they are eating cardboard. vegans eating whole plant based foods will be healthy.

(one source: The China Study)

i do think the GF / CF diet is misguided in a way, but also that there could be a greater likelihood of gluten or dairy intolerances among those on the spectrum, and it's something to be aware of. the intolerances aren't that uncommon. there is much written in The China Study about casein and its ill effects on health. if i could force everyone to read a book it would be this one.

Where do you get that about being thinner? Am I just an outlier, then? What about Callista?

The studies I have seen find that children with autism are more often obese than children without autism. In contrast, children and adolescents with Asperger's syndrome have a significantly lower BMI than those without Asperger's, or with matched psychiatric patients.

Don't we tend to have slightly lower cortisol levels than usual?

On the other hand...
Staying inside more = less vitamin D
Picky eating = vitamin deficiencies and possibly diabetes (if all you're willing to eat has a high glycemic index)

Especially, I think you greatly misunderstand what a restricted diet can mean.
