This is something I've been doing for many years, and they're also a good friend-making tool, too.

I remember when I was 11, I used to (and still do) have a hardcore obsession with Spongebob. So, I wore a Spongebob shirt almost everywhere I went (to school, camp, the store, etc.) and that's how people knew I was a big fan of the show.

Yes! I own a ton of band t-shirts, etc. I have often been obsessed with bands and try to wear their shirts all the time, and/or dress like the band members. I don't get too much attention (making friends, etc.) for it though -- I only did when I was a kid and wore a ton of Beatles shirts.

I have loads and loads of Apple t-shirts, and I got one recently which says something like, "Internet was down, so I thought I'd come outside today" :P

I wear shirts of bands or in Gothic/Industrial style. Or with something nerdy.
I use many things to show my special interests, not only shirts. For example clothes/accessories in style or notebooks with pictures (often self made).

I prefer other things than shirts, because I don't look good on them. In NT-world apperance is really important, so I care. I didn't care when I was younger and I think it was wrong.

I'm wearing one of my 9 Kinks T-shirts, right now. I have nothing to hide, from the world. I don't care, if it's not 1965. If people don't like the way, that I dress, than they don't have to look at me. They can leave their snide remarks, for their teachers. The funny thing, is that I haven't gotten any snide remarks, from the younger NT population, yet. I was picked on more, as an angry, punk rocker. I was less accepted, by the younger NT population, as a punk rocker, than I was, this summer. Yes, I can be a Kinks Fan, in today's world.

Most people don't care if you listen to the Kinks. They're a well-regarded band, and I haven't met anybody who actively dislikes them. You don't have to be so defensive.

I don't have that many t-shirts. I have some guitar shirts, and a few band shirts (Muse, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles), and if I had the money to spent on t-shirts I would get so much more band shirts.

I'm so careless when it comes to clothes. I pick out what's first in the drawr.

I have two Ghostbusters t-shirts, a Commodore t-shirt and a ton of Tottenham football shirts that date back to the early nineties.

Isn't ironic that most people don't care if I like The Kinks, but those same people were scared of me, or nasty to me, when I had spiked, green hair? 1977 is more recent than 1965, yet people respect me more, as a person who likes the Mid 60s, being the person, that I'm meant to be. Now that everybody knows where I'm coming from, I can leave this thread, in peace.

I like to really subtly express my special interests. Sure, I have T-shirts that relate to them, but they're not "in your face." They don't have things like "cancer research" or "science fiction" emblazoned on them.

I guess what I really, really like is essentially "wearing an in-joke." If you like what I like, you'll know I'm referencing it - but if you don't, you won't have a clue.

For instance:
- I like biomedical science. I own shirts with genetics and biochemistry jokes on them. You have to have at least a few years of university-level biology to really "get" any of them.
- I like Firefly. I don't have a single possession that shows it, but I do have a shirt that says, "And they will know us by the colour of our coats," with an image. Only a Browncoat would know.
- I like Ender's Game. My shirt is plain and simply says, "The enemy's gate is down." You'd only know if you'd read it and remembered it.
- I like Doctor Who. I haven't got any shirts, but I've got the shoes. That's right. Those shoes. This is my favourite subtle reference because even if you love Doctor Who, you probably won't immediately assume that that's the reason I'm wearing the shoes.

The more "in-joke-y," the more subtle, the less attention-getting, the better. It's like a secret message that can only be read by people who are like me.
